CFE005 Primary Language Learning: National 4/5 French Course

Primary Language Learning

Course Title:      National 4/National 5 French course

Dates: Thursdays, 4.30-6.30 throughout the session ( dates TBC subject to interest)

Venue: Knox Academy

This course is intended for:

-People who would like to develop a greater degree of confidence and fluency in French over an extended period of time and gain a qualification.

Course details:

This will be a bi-level course, and decisions regarding levels can be discussed with the tutor during the year. It will focus on understanding and using French as well as building vocabulary and grammar.

National 4 is the equivalent of Standard Grade Level 4. It is certificated by the SQA but assessments are all internal. It divides into 3 units:

Unit 1 – Understanding Language (Listening and Reading)

Unit 2 – Using language (Talking and Writing)

The themes covered are Society, Learning and Employability and Culture.

Unit 3 – This is an ‘Added Value’ unit, for which there is an additional Reading assessment and Talking assessment.

Each unit can be completed independently of the other units, though in practice the 4 skills support each other. There is one assessment for each skill.

A certificate is awarded once all units have been achieved but credits are given for achieving single units and can be carried forward to future years.

The National 5 qualification is the equivalent of Standard Grade Credit Level.

The themes covered are the same as National 4: Society, Learning and Employability and Culture and learning is also centred around progression in the 4 skills of Listening and Talking, Reading and Writing. There is an SQA exam in May for a National 5 qualification.
