Wednesday 26 October 2016 5-7pm at Mary Poppins Nursery Athelstaneford

Session PC03: Developing a Growth Mindset

A Twilight Session designed for all practitioners working in Early Learning and Childcare in East Lothian as part of a series of twilight sessions to build our ambition to be reflective practitioners dedicated to delivering the highest quality early learning experiences. The sessions provide an ideal opportunity to develop a partnership network and to share practice

Session overview:

Growth mindset

Carol Dweck, a Psychology Professor, indentified two basic “mindsets”: the Fixed Mindset, which is the belief that our personal qualities are set in stone and cannot really be changed, and the Growth Mindset, which is the belief that personal qualities can grow and develop with effort and the correct use of strategies.  Research indicates that, by age of 4, some children are developing fixed mindsets traits.  Carol Dweck’s research suggests that this is to do with the messages that children pick up about what others value in them.

This session will involve professional dialogue considering:

  • Our own mindsets and how to model a growth mindset
  • Use of specific praise and feedback
  • Celebrating mistakes and challenge through a whole organisation approach, use of songs, stories and more!

Session Tutor: Martha Gordon Educational Psychologist  – East Lothian Psychological Services
