Mrs Maule will start her maternity leave after the Easter holidays. Miss Stewart will be the class teacher until the summer holidays. Miss Stewart will be working with Mrs Maule for a handover on Tuesday 30th March and Wednesday 31st March. We wish Mrs Maule all the best in this exciting new time for her.
The school has purchased a variety of new resources to enhance the curriculum: – e.g. a new sound system, 4 digital cameras, 3 new laptops, and playground equipment have all been ordered
We have also purchased Junior Librarian. This is a database, which helps with the management and organisation of the library.
The school has made a request to the parent council for some funds to buy new resources for the library such as new books and some comfortable chairs for the library, it is thought around £2,000 would be needed. The parent council approved this.
In addition to this new library resource, we have been offered the opportunity to take part in a pilot of accelerated reading for P6 and P7, which we have accepted. Accelerated reader’s advanced technology helps to: –
- Make essential reading practice more effective for every pupil
- Personalise reading practice to each pupil’s current level
- Manages all reading practice including read to, read with, and read independently
- Assesses pupils reading with 4 types of quizzes: Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice, Literacy Skills, and Textbook Quizzes
- Build a lifelong love of reading and learning
New budget information has also been released and we are delighted to inform you that we will be getting an additional teacher next year to assist across P1-P3 classes.
Free school dinners
Next session P1-P3 children will receive free school meals in St Gabriel’s. More information about this please see the attached from Joyce Marlow.
Thank you to Mrs Adams for organising and leading a Morning Prayer Session from 8.30-8.45 during Lent. We have had good attendance form both Parents and pupils and this has been a good opportunity for Lenten Reflection.
Stations of the Cross
We have arranged with Fr Paul Francis to have Stations of the Cross for the whole school on Wednesday 31st March at 1.15 in St Gabriel’s. You are most welcome to join us.
In consultation with pupils we have decide to organise a whole school Sing -a- thon as this year’s SCIAF fundraiser.
Each class will be given a block of Singing time on Tuesday 30th March with the intention that a group is singing in school from 9am until 3pm. We are not expecting the children to go around doors collecting sponsors but we are asking the children to try to get at least one or two family/friends to sponsor them for this event. It would be helpful to have the money in on the day the fundraiser takes place or the day after because of the holiday timescale. This would enable us to combine the money raised with our Parish fundraising for Easter. Many thanks for your assistance with this.
Mrs Adams is currently undertaking Forest Schools training. This training enables her to take groups of children into woodland area and work with them on various teambuilding/life skills. The programme is thought to have huge benefits to participants encouraging teamwork and building self-esteem. We hope that many of our pupils will benefit in the near future from taking part in this new initiative. Any Parents who would like to support in this would be very welcome to come along and help, please get in touch with Mrs.Adams.
Creative Music Workshops
Our P3 children have been working on a creative music -making project, as have other P3 classes in our cluster. Each P3 class have had two two-hour sessions with the music provider, Louise Martin – a professional musician who has lots of experience working with young children. The project will use original songs composed by Louise based around Roald Dahl’s ‘Dirty Beasts’ ‘Revolting Rhymes’ poems. These poems are used as the inspiration to create original songs with the children and descriptive music creations. In the third session, the children would come together in Prestonpans Infants to have a rehearsal and then perform their pieces to each other. This performance takes place on Monday 29th March and is for pupils only. The children in P3 will get an early lunch on Monday.
Scottish Country Dancing
The P3’s will also get the opportunity to work with Prestonpans P3’s on Wednesday 19th May when they will demonstrate their Scottish Country Dancing skills.
We have had a couple of occasions recently when Parents have made their way directly to corridors or nursery/primary classrooms to discuss queries/concerns with class teachers. Although these visits were well intentioned it is important that all visitors sign in at the school office prior to any meeting. During school hours, queries and concerns should be brought to HT or PT to allow teachers maximum learning and teaching time with their class. I would encourage all parents to assist us in this. Many Thanks.
On Sunday our drummers took part in an inter school drumming competition here at St Gabriel’s. The standard of the drumming was very high and although we did not win all of the children did exceptionally well. Thank you to all Parents who came along on the day to watch the children perform. Congratulations go to Loretto Junior and Loretto Senior school who won the event for both Primary and Secondary category.
On the first day back after the holiday the P7, P1 and Nursery groups will get a class photograph taken. If possible it would be nice to see our children in white shirts and ties for these photographs (primary classes only). We do have some spare ties for pupils to borrow on the day if they do not have one.
Finally, we would like to wish you all a very good Easter break. The children will finish on Thursday 1st April at 3.15pm and return to school on Tuesday 20th April at 8.45am.
