After going down to the woods earlier in the week with our Nursery Buddies and Esmerelda the Woodland Elf, we thought about what a magical garden would look like.
We made plans…….
We thought of different things we might see in a magic garden and made some drawings. Next, we added labels and arrows to our work to make the pictures into diagrams.

Then we got to work!
We used the boxes and resources we brought from home to make….a mess….

….and these AMAZING Magic Gardens!

Today in Whole Class Reading we were thinking about washing our hands…..properly!
Because we are going to be spending time playing in the mud and handling food this term, we thought it was important to learn how to make sure our hands are clean.
We used this little song to help us find out what to do then all had a go washing our hands .
Next, we read the instructions to wash hands and used the text to help us think about what to draw for each instruction. Lesley helped us to put some of the posters on the walls in the toilets to remind everyone about washing hands PROPERLY!
Grown-ups…..has someone taught you how to wash your hands yet?

We had a woodland elf in our classroom today – Esmerelda!
Esmerelda left a letter for the Nursery and Primary 1 children. Her fairy and elf friends want to go on holiday and thought that our woodlands would be a lovely place to stay. However, they need to have a quiet area for reading and drawing and a place to make a kitchen. She asked if we would go down to the woods to find some suitable places….so we did!

We left a little present for Esmerelda and her woodland friends – ingredients and utensils to make some woodland fairy cakes!

This week, we have had great fun practising our addition and subtraction using a counting machine – a calculator!
In class on Friday, we used this website to help us solve calculations on our calculators.
If you have a calculator at home, you might want to have a go to show the grown-ups how clever you are!

Today, the children helped me to sort out my shopping bag!
When we need food, we usually nip to the shops and buy some. But today, we thought about where food comes from BEFORE it gets to the shops.
We put some hoops on the floor. Each hoop had a picture in it – a pig, a cow, some crops and a hen. We took turns to take some shopping from Mrs Jamieson’s bag, and decided where it came from.

Maybe you could talk about where food comes from next time you are out shopping together?
For story, we watched a little red hen ask some animals on the farm to help her plant wheat, grow wheat, bake bread and eat bread……….enjoy!

This term, we are joining with our Nursery Buddies to help them get ready for Primary 1. (If your child came to Yester Nursery, you will perhaps remember similar transition activities last year. These proved invaluable in helping your child prepare for and settle into Primary 1.) We are going to work together to learn outdoors in a mud kitchen! There will be plenty of photos, so make sure you keep checking the website. We will be heading down to the woods every Monday morning, so please send your child to school dressed for playing in mud! They can bring their school clothes in a NAMED bag, and change into them when we have finished slaistering!
In order to extend the Primary 1 learning, we will also be finding out about food, where it comes from, tasting and growing. Let’s hope we have lots of sunny days ahead…..
