Lost!

We have been talking and thinking about what we would do if we got lost!
We read a story about Kipper losing the magic key. We talked about how everyone felt in the story.

Next, we thought about the things we could do to make sure we don’t get lost…

  • hold a grown-ups hand
  • hold onto the shopping trolley
  • tell a grown-up where you’re going

We also talked about what we would do if we got lost in the street, in the supermarket and in the cinema. Who could you go to for help?

For homework, your child should have brought home a sheet to help them learn their name, address and telephone number. Please return to school when your child knows this information off by heart.

Our Lungs

Great fun this afternoon doing some experiments to find out about the air in our lungs!

We used blow pipes and the air in our lungs to hold a little ball in the air. When we breathed out, air was pushed out of our lungs and then pushed the ball into the air.

Next, we had a competition to see who had the most air in our lungs. We used a cup of water with washing up liquid and a straw to see who could blow the most bubbles. If you have lots of air in your lungs, you will be able to make lots of bubbles.

The children put the straws in their schoolbags afterwards to use for HOMEWORK…..
Next time you have a bath, can you ask Mummy or Daddy to put some bubble bath in the water? Use your straw to blow air into the water and make the biggest bubble mountain in the world!

Please leave us a comment to let us know how you got on. Have fun!

Our Ceilidh to day was fantastic – thank you to all those who came along to support us.
For those of you who didn’t manage to drop by, here are some photos. I think there may be more “action shots” on the P1/2 class website too!

My Body

We have a new challenge in Primary 1 – to make a fact book all about “My Body.” We need to include facts about our bodies, our skeleton, our organs, our senses and the measurements of our bodies.

This week, we have been finding out about diagrams. They are pictures that give information. A diagram has a picture, labels and arrows pointing to the picture.

We made diagrams about our bodies. First, we had fun singing and doing the actions to a song about our bodies…

Then we made labels to match the pictures. We used arrows to point to the correct part of the picture.

Reminders!

It is World Book Day on Thursday, 5th March.
Just a quick reminder that the children have been invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Primary 1 children are also going to be working with their Nursery Buddies on Thursday, so could they also bring in their favourite book to share? Don’t forget to put names on books!

Our much anticipated Primary 1 and 1/2 Ceilidh will be taking place on Monday 9th March at 1:30 – 2:50. It would be great to see you there if you can make it! The children can come to school dressed in anything tartan – from full kilt or tartan hair ribbon! We have made tartan rosettes, so everyone will have something to wear on the day.
Make sure you wear footwear suitable for dancing – audience participation required!

Glad the website is up and running again. (Still waiting for new projector and wand though!)

We couldn’t get into the gym hall this week as it was being used by some visiting scientists (we will have our turn in a few weeks…)

However, we still worked with P1/2 in their classroom to prepare for our Ceilidh on Monday, 9th March at 1:30.

We made some tartan rosettes to wear. Fair braw!

Great fun this morning at our school ceilidh!
Every class has been working very hard in PE learning lots of different Scottish dances. The children in Primary 1 and 2 did the Haymakers Dance and the Waterdown Reel. Even the teachers danced the Dashing White Sergeant – Mr Purves was very good at spinning us around!

All the children in school are busy making table decorations for our Christmas Lunch on Wednesday. We asked our friends in Primary 6 to come and help us make some crackers.

We had a great afternoon- thank you Primary 6!

Anti-Bullying Week

It has been Anti-Bulling Week in Yester.
The children in Primary 1 talked about what a bully might do…

  • Make you feel frightened
  • Hurt you
  • Call you names.

We also said that a Bully would do this lots and lots of times – bullying is different from an argument or falling out with your friend.

In whole class reading, we read about a girl called Rosie, who was being bullied by bigger children. In the text, Wilma told Mrs May. This was the right thing to do – tell an adult.

In writing, we made posters to tell other children in the school what to do if they are being bullied. Our posters showed the different adults you could tell.

It was great to welcome lots of parents to our lunch hall today.  The children did a fantastic job of showing the grown-ups what to do!
