Primary 5 Poems

Primary 5 have recently entered the “Big Green Poetry Machine” Young Writers Competition. They had to become Eco-kids and write poems to try to make a difference and make the world a better place. They had to choose a subject they were passionate about and try to make the reader feel as they were feeling. As we are learning about the Rainforests, many children chose this topic. The poems have now been sent off to the competition and any winners will be published in a special “Big Green Poetry Machine” book made from environmentally friendly paper. Here are two of the poems, good luck Primary 5!

On The Go by Jack O’Malley

The monkey swings, the sloth is slow
but every single animal is on the go, go, go!
All the trees are being chopped down, ten million by the hour.
And every single animal has not one piece of power.
The monkey swings, the sloth is slow
but every single animal is on the go go go!
Some animals will escape, others are not so lucky
As they run away, they scale immense landscapes.
The monkey swings, the sloth is slow
but every single animal is on the go go go!
We control the future, the future we control
so stop the trees getting chopped down
and the mystery will unroll
The monkey swings, the sloth is slow
but every single animal is on the go go go!

The Wonderful World by Daisy Chambers

The wonderful world is suffering
and it may be all our fault.
But if we all work together,
Pollution can come to a hault.
Let’s recycle,
use our brains.
So that in a few years,
the Earth will be more than remains.

The wonderful world, the excellent earth,
will be even more beautiful, with a little hard work.

Animals are dying,
this is bad,
hunters are hunting.
Extinction is sad.

The wonderful world, the excellent Earth,
will be even more beautiful, with a little hard work.

Changeworks Visit

On Thursday 15th of May a man called Neil came to see the p6 and p7 members of the eco-committee. He was from a company called Changeworks. He told them about a competition his company was setting for schools all around East Lothian. The competition was to see which school could reduce the most waste in two to three weeks.
In the lunch hall the girls from the eco-committee stood in a row and sorted out the waste into different categories. Each girl had a bag for different things. One each for food waste, juice cartons, plastic bottles, compost and one of the girls squirted out the leftover juice in cartons or bottles. After lunch they weighed the bags and all together it weighed a staggering 12,200 grams. Unfortunately for the girl who was holding the food waste bag it was stew and potatoes for lunch. SMELLY!

Yellow Pages!!!

The Eco committee of Aberlady Primary School started to collect Yellow Pages at the start of December for a competition (collecting the most Yellow Pages). Unfortunately we didn’t come 1st but we came 7th out of 31 entries. Well done to Athelstaneford School for coming 1st. It got better when we got news from Miss Curran (head teacher) that we had won the picture competition. This competition was to design a picture using Yellow Pages-(front covers). Aberlady made a picture of a vase with flowers and it was surrounded by a bee and a butterfly. Well done to the Eco committee who made the picture!!!!!
