Newt, Bat and Moth Surveys

On the evening of Friday 4th and morning of Saturday 5th May we’ll be carrying out our annual, springtime survey of newts, bats and moths. We’ll meet in the car park at 6.30pm on Fri 4th when we’ll be ably assisted by members of the Lothian Amphibian and Reptiles Group (LARG) in setting bottle traps in some of the reserve’s wet bits.

If the weather is kind, we will set up the moth traps and, as it gets dark, see which moths come in. We will also have the use of bat detectors to use when it gets dark too. You are welcome to stay out as long as you wish. If conditions are good, I may be there till midnight. Please bring a torch (if staying for moths and bats) and warm clothes. You may also appreciate bringing a snack and a hot drink.

We will meet again at 9am the following morning to check the traps to see what we’ve caught. It’ll take about three hours to empty the traps.

PLEASE BRING EMPTY TWO-LITRE BOTTLES, if you have any, to make (Blue Peter style) some new newt traps (we don’t need the lids).

Please let me know if you will be coming along.
