Spontaneity

“Only in spontaneity can we be who we truly are.” John McLaughlin (b. 1942)

“You might lose your spontaneity and, instead of composing first-rate Gershwin, end up with second rate Ravel.” Maurice Ravel (1875 – 1937)

Can you teach spontaneity? Who knows, but when a spontaneity gift horse comes along, it’s a shame to miss it. The MGS Guitar Group rehearses in Miss Cruickshank’s room after classes have finished on a Friday. Miss C often sits at the computer and listens in. As this week’s rehearsal coincided (more or less) with a significant birthday the opportunity presented itself. “6th years, you’ll need chords of C, F & G. Everyone else, find an open G and we’ll play Happy Birthday, by ear, to Miss Cruickshank.” I have to say, they made a good fist of it. It was quite an affectionate moment and a nice end to the week.
