I received a link to this interesting survey on musicians’ earnings from friend, former lecturer and organist célèbre, Philip Sawyer. Compiled by the Musicians Benevolnt Fund, it makes for interesting reading – especially In our current economic climate.

Fascinating couple of posts Alan, thanks.
My younger son (the one who intends to be a composer) was very interested in the MBF survey. We notice that few musicians earn money from composition…but of course he is going to be among the few 😉
The Edinburgh orchestra I play in (www.newedinburghorchestra.org.uk)does 3 concerts a year, always including a piece by a living composer, and we have commissioned some. I think this is done through a grant, and therefore subsidised. Do you have any idea how much new music is produced in this way?
I was interested to see Philip’s website – we used to know Philip years ago in Edinburgh, but haven’t seen him for years. He looks well 🙂
