Big Guitar Weekend

Guitar Festivals seem to be in the air. Look here for details of Big Guitar Weekend 2010. Suffice to say that John Williams is one of the guests! Also featured are Pavel Steidl and Tommy Emannuel. There are also interesting looking fringe events. Director, Allan Neave, is also to appear as a soloist at the Edinburgh International Guitar Festival.

Agustín Barrios Mangoré

On today’s edition of Radio 4’s Great Lives, the guitarist, John Williams chose, as his biographical subject, the Paraguyan guitarist/composer, Agustín Barrios Mangoré. He cited as specific qualities, impeccable technique, inventive use of harmony & romanticism.

Here is a recording of Barrios from 1928:

The programme always features, in addition to the guest, an expert on the life of the chosen hero. This week’s expert was Paraguyan guitarist, Berta Rojas (whom I once saw play in the Dundee Guitar Festival). Here she is playing the final section of La Catedral:

Guitarists talking guitar

Radio 4 is broadcasting a series of five short programmes this week (Mon – Fri, 15:45 – 16:00) about guitar style and technique. Each day, Joan Armatrading discusses playing ideas, tunings etc. with one of five players: Mark Knopfler, Bonnie Raitt, John Williams, Russel Lissack and Bert Jansch.
