The Mental Welfare Commission is currently reviewing the care and treatment of people with eating disorders in Scotland.
In recent months they carried out a series of visits to wards and community services to look at the care and treatment of people with an eating disorder, and met with patients and families/carers.
They are now keen to hear from people they did not get to meet on these visits, including GPs, psychiatrists, dietitians, those providing psychological therapies, and individuals and families.

|The Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland has today launched a stakeholder survey seeking feedback on our roles and our work. The aim of the survey is to gather the views of people who have been in touch with the Commission, either on a personal or professional basis. We are looking to find out how well each of our roles and responsibilities is understood, and to hear about how well you think we are doing.|
This survey is being conducted by Wellside Research Ltd., an independent research company based in Scotland. All responses are anonymous and will be treated as confidential. Wellside Research will not share individual responses with the Mental Welfare Commission. The survey will take around 15-20 minutes to complete and is available here.
The survey also contains information about a stakeholder event we are holding on 10 March so that we can get more detailed views about people’s experiences of the Commission. The 2020 Scottish Social Services Awards will open for nominations on Monday 13th January 2020.
This year the awards are merging with the Scottish Association of Social Work awards. The new partnership will see categories introduced for a Social Worker and Student Social Worker of the Year.
Other changes also include updated categories about ethical practice from the Scottish Social Services Council and leadership in social work from Social Work Scotland.
To mark the merger the ceremony will take place at a new venue in Edinburgh. Finalists and guests will be invited to a special evening event due to take place at The Hub on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile from 6pm on Wednesday 3 June 2020.

People have until the 21st February 2020 to enter or nominate an individual or team for an award.

As you are aware our new hospital has now opened and over the next few months construction work including demolishing the last remaining buildings will continue to allow the groundwork to progress creating additional parking and landscaping.
The following describes the efforts being made to manage the limited car parking in order to maximise opportunities for patients, visitors and those staff that require to park onsite.
Within the North Car Park there will be approx 150 parking spaces inclusive of Disabled parking. These spaces will be for use only by patients, visitors and some staff.
North Parking Bays – Staff Parking – 22 spaces, nearest to Alderston Road
Central Parking Bays – Staff Parking – 65 spaces
South Parking Bays– Patient & Visitor Only Parking – 63 spaces
Disabled Parking – Area outside ELCH Entrance
Drop off area directly at the front of the Hospital entrance is not a parking area and must remain free at all times to allow uninterrupted operational use.
Please note that it is not be acceptable to park in the Visitor Parking area if any of the designated Staff areas identified above are full. You would in this instance, require to park off site appropriately and while doing so please ensure the following notes are applied:
- Drivers should be aware that you cannot park or wait on double yellow lines at any time.
- You must not wait or park on single yellow lines at the times stated on corresponding signs.
- Unless you are entitled to, you must not park in disabled parking spaces or resident parking spaces.
- You must also not park, within 10 metres of a junction, over a dropped kerb and in front of an entrance to a property
- It is very important that we respect our residential neighbours and remember, do not park in residential parking bays and ensure you park in a manner that will not obstruct footways, driveways or junctions.
Parking of All Grey Fleet and Pool Vehicles
With immediate effect and only during the final construction stages at ELCH, all pool cars and grey fleet vehicles must be parked at the Herdmanflat Hospital site.
This car park is monitored by security and is being retained specifically to relieve pressure of parking at the ELCH.
This has been agreed with the executive management team and partnership colleagues.
The site management team understand the frustrations surrounding this matter and they continue to engage with the local community.
Both Morrison Construction and NHS Lothian teams have been in communication with local residents, East Lothian Council & Police Scotland and have made assurances that we will continue to monitor parking and will continue this until it is no longer required.
NHS Lothian regret any inconvenience caused to local residents and staff and would like to thank them for their on-going patience during this time.,
The new Community Hospital is a significant investment in East Lothian’s healthcare provision and we appreciate the continued support of the local community during this further construction phase.
The process for deciding how much the council will raise in income and spend on services in future years is an ongoing process. And they have just launched their annual consultation process.
Plans will be affected by changing political structures, new demands or legislation, the state of the general economy, demographics and the events that we cannot always predict. However, there are a number of key documents such as The Council Plan 2017-2022 and the annual budget.

The next meeting on transforming services for older people is on 14 January 2020 from 13.00-16.00 at the new East Lothian Community Hospital. This marks the beginning of the next phase of reproviding services currently provided at the Edington and Belhaven Hospitals and Abbey and Eskgreen Care Homes and follows on from the meeting some local representives came to with Hub South East at Queen Margaret University in June.
There has been a delay in convening this meeting, as we were waiting for the project team delivering the new Community Hospital to be free. The hospital opened in November, and the team, including Hub South East, are now able to take this reprovisioning work forward. We have decided to hold our meeting in the Community Hall at the new hospital so that you can have a look around and see what they have achieved. There will be an opportunity to take a tour of the hospital and we hope you will be able to join us beforehand for a light buffet lunch. We are inviting representatives from across East Lothian as this work will result in provision for people in all our communities.
At this meeting, we hope to provide more information about the timeline for the work and to look with you at how local communities will be involved. Many of you have nominees ready and waiting to take part in local project teams. It would be really helpful if you could share this invitation through your networks so that anyone with an interest may attend.

Just thought I’d do a quick diary round-up now as people start getting ready for the festive season.
The run up to Christmas has been as hectic as ever. We have a visit from NHS Lothian Chief Executive Tim Davison just over a week ago during which we updated him on ELHSCP’s progress and gave him a chance to have a look around the East Lothian Community Hospital. We also said goodbye to East Lothian Council’s Chief Executive Angela Leitch, who has left to take up a new role as Chief Executive of Public Health Scotland. Alex McCrorie is Interim Chief Executive and the Chief Executive will be announced shortly.
We also held the last IJB meeting of the year, at which Judith Tait (in her Chief Social Work Officer role) gave us her annual report. The report gives a full over-view of the delivery of social work services in East Lothian, including fostering, child protection, adult protection, adult social care and criminal justice social work. It also provides commentary and analysis of the Health and Social Care Partnership. Judith said that in a difficult period for social work nationally, we are holding our own. She said that our staff continue to work hard to help people make and sustain positive changes in their lives. She was clear that there would be challenges ahead but was confident that East Lothian Health and Social Partnership was addressing these in our strategic plan.
I think that’s a really positive message and covers not just social work but integrated health and social care. Times are tough but through a combination of innovative approaches and integrated working, we are using our resources and experience wisely to help the growing number of people who use our services to achieve good outcomes.
It has been a big year for us in so many areas – the implementation of the Carers Strategy, achievements acknowledged in the Care Inspectorate’s national thematic review of Self-Directed Support, the new East Lothian Community Hospital, Wellwynd Hub, the success of the Community Review Team, START and our new mental-health/substance misuse drop in in Musselburgh. Those are just a few of our achievements – things are really beginning to come together and this is very much down to all of you. Your willingness to embrace integrated working and share ideas and good practice has led to much of our success this year. The momentum is building so let’s keep that going now.
So it just remains for me to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. To those of you who are preparing for a break, happy holidays – rest, recuperate and enjoy! To those of you working over Christmas and New Year, a really big thank you. I know there are many people relying on you to whose days you will make a big difference. And enjoy your Christmas when it comes.
