A community-wide Reading initiative is being planned for Musselburgh. Schools, families, businesses, community groups, everyone is invited to be involved.
We are all invited to a meeting at Musselburgh East Community Learning Centre on Thursday 8th October at 7.30pm to find out more.
Here is a little more information…
“Reading has been identified as the crucial skill to ensure long term success for our young people (PISA 2002). Both Dunbar and Tranent area have run similar projects which have had a measurable positive effect on children’s reading as shown by the following extract from HMIe Inspection report:
Inspection of the learning community surrounding Dunbar Grammar School, East Lothian Council 9 April 2013
‘Local businesses, sports clubs, libraries, CLD staff, and volunteers, together with staff and partners from Dunbar Primary School work effectively to develop Dunbar Reads Together. The initiative is enthusiastically supported across the town and has had a measurable impact on improving children’s abilities in reading and literacy.’‘
We are at the early stages of planning a similar project for Musselburgh, Whitecraig and Wallyford. Launch date will be March 1st 2016, but there are many exciting details and opportunities to be organised before then. To that end a meeting is planned for Thursday 8th October at 7.30pm in the Musselburgh East Community Learning Centre (MECLC).
Anyone with an interest in these local communities or a desire to support our young people in securing a successful future is invited.”
Please share this information and the details of the meeting with anyone you think might be interested.
Hope to see you there…

Reading Softstart on PhotoPeach
Great to see so many happy readers at reading Softstart this morning at Campie.
Thanks to everyone who came to read with us!
AMAZING READING DISPLAYS on PhotoPeach
All the classes at Campie have been very busy creating reading displays for our corridor.
If you’d like to see them in real life, come and join us on Thursday 17th September for Reading Softstart in all of our classes.
It was wonderful to see so many of our families in school last night. The school was buzzing with excited children eager to introduce their families to their teacher and share the spaces that they come to learn in every day. It was a lovely, informal opportunity to meet with everyone and take time to look at the displays and resources. The staff team hope you found it as valuable and worthwhile as we did.
Many thanks to everyone who came to help us walk down to the Brunton Hall yesterday to view the ‘Aviva Tour of Britain’. Despite the wait it was very exciting to see the cyclists zoom past!
It is very exciting that such a large scale cycling event is coming to Musselburgh, and we want to ensure that the children are given the opportunity to be involved.
The race attracts some of the world’s best known cyclists, such as Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins. The event is televised daily live with a highlights programme each night on ITV4.
On Wednesday 9th September 2015 the Tour will be coming to Musselburgh and we’ll be there to see it!
We will be walking as a school to view the Tour from our designated space on North High Street, just outside the Brunton Hall.
The nursery will leave at 9.00am and the P1-7 children will leave at 9.15am.
We need lots of adults to walk with us. If you’d be able to join us to walk to our viewing are and enjoy the race with us please contact the office.

P5A visit Edinburgh Book Festival on PhotoPeach
P5A had great fun at Edinburgh Book Festival yesterday.
We listened to Nicola Davies. She spoke about her love her nature and wild animals and some of the travels she has been on. She even showed us some ibex poo….! Then she read from her new book, ‘The Leopard’s Tail’. It sounded so good, we bought it and one about a manatee too.
She certainly inspired us to read her books and find out more about endangered animals and how we can protect them.
