Mick aims to raise the aspirations of young people by highlighting the success of former pupils of their school.

The initiative focuses not only on high flyers, but also on individuals who may not be household names but who carry out a vital role in society. This helps pupils realise there is more to individual success than simply becoming rich and famous.

As youngsters are introduced to individuals in whose footsteps they are following, they gain confidence and realise they too can go on to be successful in a variety of ways.

Vacancy – Apprentice steel fabricator/welder

Kay Engineering, Unit 3, Macmerry Industrial Estate, Tel:  01875 616190 are going to recruit an apprentice and will be advertising in local paper (probably EL News) but would also appreciate it if school CAs/guidance staff could refer any suitable pupils/leavers they identify as being interested.

  • Requirements:  Interest in metalwork and welding.  Obvious motivation and enthusiasm.  No formal quals. necessary.

The company is small – 4 employees – but has a lot of business.  It’s not easy to find – it’s situated to the left of Hart Builders up through two sets of double gates and is on the right-hand side in a huge shed.

Nottingham – Vet Medicine

The University of Nottingham says it is “taking a fresh approach to veterinary education” by offering 2 new degree courses – one lasting 5 years and one lasting 6 years aimed at non-science students. They claim they will consider applicants with “vocational qualifications, extensive experience and also those with non-conventional educational backgrounds” as well as those with the usual academic qualifications. Churchill College – Cambridge

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Bursary Scheme is available to anyone applying to
Cambridge for 2008 entry (i.e. applying this autumn).  It is aimed at pupils who are academically very strong who may not otherwise be able to consider applying to
Cambridge.  This year 5 bursaries were awarded worth up to £2000 per year of study.  The closing date for nominations is 1st March 2008.  Full details available on
