New 2014 Theme: Ideal for Magazine Style Sites

With the recent update of WordPress to V3.8, we now have the new default 2014 theme available. It has been developed to support a magazine style layout, such as shown here.

In 2014, our default theme lets you create a responsive magazine website with a sleek, modern design. Feature your favorite homepage content in either a grid or a slider. Use the three widget areas to customize your website, and change your content’s layout with a full-width page template and a contributor page to show off your authors. Creating a magazine website with WordPress has never been easier.

If you’re interested in using it, and need help getting started please contact support@edubuzz.org  or leave  comment.

Problem with use of legacy links (i.e. including /blogs/ in URL) now resolved

Internet1Following the site move some stored links and forwarded domain names were producing a “no such page” error.  We believe this has now been resolved.

Details: If you’ve been using eduBuzz blogs since the early years, you may remember that all sites (blogs) used to have names like https://edubuzz.org/blogs/myschoolsite. When we moved to a shorter URL, without the /blogs part, an arrangement has been in place to “catch” any attempts to visit the old URLs and redirect the visitor to the new URL. That arrangement was temporarily lost during the move. This meant that attempts to access the old URLs, instead of being redirected, just failed and displayed a “no such page” error. The redirection is now back in place, and these old links will still work.

eduBuzz Migration: Update, Monday 16th

This is an update on the following current issues:

Spam comments: On Friday we discovered that the anti-spam service which protects the blogs from comment spam was not working, but unfortunately too late to get it fixed by the weekend. This has led to a deluge of spam comments over the weekend. That is now fixed, spam levels should be minimal. Continue reading eduBuzz Migration: Update, Monday 16th

eduBuzz.org Migration Update

The eduBuzz.org WordPress site has moved to a new server system today, and testing is in progress.  This is later than expected, due to the volumes of data involved.

Please don’t panic if you notice that recent posts (since 00.00hrs on Monday) have vanished. Arrangements are in hand to restore these later today and tomorrow.

This is being done to improve the capacity, efficiency and reliability, by having it run by a company, DXW, which specialises in running WordPress sites for public sector customers.

Testing so far has identified the following issues. Please leave a comment or contact us (support@edubuzz.org) if you notice any others.

  • Site addresses without the “www” part are not working. For example, if you want to access https://edubuzz.org/law, you will currently need to go to http://www.edubuzz.org/law.
  • Uploaded images are not displaying correctly. Attempting to access them individually via their URL fails on a permissions error.
  • Uploading files to a site may generate a “Error … Unable to create directory wp-content/blogs.dir/xxx/files/2013/12. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
  • Some existing uploaded header image files, and files in Media Gallery, are inaccessible.

Updates to this post:

13.45: Image permissions issue crossed out, now resolved.

16.25: Legacy URL issue crossed out, fix in place at 14.52, see below.

23.30: Added “Unable to create directory” error.

13/12

00.20:  Inaccessible uploaded header image and Media Gallery files added
