Active Schools Prestonpans Update

Active Schools have been planning for a gradual and safe return to sport and physical activity. There are lots of challenges to overcome and we want to ensure we have all the essential safety measures in place to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for our participants, volunteers, coaches and all involved in bringing activities back to the Prestonpans school area.

Please click here to read an important update on our Active Schools Recovery Plan from Mark Urwin, Senior Active Schools Coordinator for East Lothian.

What does this mean for Prestonpans Active Schools?
As we learn to manage new procedures, we’ll be taking everything one step at a time, and we may be able to reintroduce a very limited number of activities over the next few weeks and months. For now, any activities that take place will have a limited capacity and will be outdoors only at Secondary Schools (Preston Lodge High School) or Community and EnjoyLeisure sites.

What we can safely manage at this stage will depend on guidance from National Governing Bodies, access to facilities, and availability of coaches and volunteers. As we progress through the weeks and months ahead, we will continue to monitor the latest guidance and advice from the Scottish Government, SportScotland and National Governing Bodies for each sport and activity.

For the time-being, activities will be advertised as and when they become available, rather than as a whole activity timetable.

All activities will be booked online using our Active Schools Booking Page, no paper booking forms, cash or cheques will be accepted for now. Please contact me directly if you are unable to access our online booking page when booking becomes available.

Guidance on Returning to Activities
For further information on what to expect when returning to activities, please see our Guidance for Parents/Carers & Pupils below. Please read this before booking or attending any activities.

Now more than ever, we are relying on willing volunteers to deliver or support a range of sports and activities and help us to provide more opportunities in the local community for children and young people to adopt active, healthy lifestyles. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering with Active Schools, please email me at

Over the next few months, I’ll be in touch more frequently to keep you up-to-date with the latest information on available activities as they are gradually reintroduced.

For all the latest updates, you can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you for your continued support, patience and understanding during what has been a challenging time for all. I’ll look forward to sharing more news and information on Prestonpans Active Schools with you very soon.

A message from our Catering Services

As you will be aware, until now our Catering Service has been offering packed lunches at lunch time, served directly to the classroom.  From Tuesday 22nd September, in addition to the cold packed lunch, an optional warm cup of homemade soup will be offered too.  There is no need to pre-order this, pupils will be able to choose to have the soup on the day (Monday to Thursday).  There will be a different soup available each day e.g. lentil, vegetable or tomato.

Starting after the October break, we will introduce more warm food options such as Pizza Power, Paninis etc.  These will be available to pre-order through SchoolPay.

ELC are keen to offer warm food choices to our children while we wait for it to become safe to serve the full hot lunch service in our dining halls.

Class Information and Termly Highlights

As you know, due to Scottish Government and East Lothian Council regulations and guidance we cannot have our usual evenings this term when parents/carers are invited in to their child’s class to find out more about the year ahead.

We have made Powerpoints for you with some information regarding each class, along with termly highlights which we hope you will find useful.

This term we are very fortunate to be welcoming Martyn Pegg from Outdoor Learning to Cockenzie.  Martyn is an experienced teacher working with each class from P1 – P7, along with the class teachers to promote learning in the outdoors.  The outdoor environment has massive potential for creative and challenging learning experiences.  We are lucky to have excellent grounds in Cockenzie, and will be working alongside Martyn to provide meaningful, motivating and exciting lessons for the children.

Message from Catering

Although our normal school meals service is currently unavailable, I’d like to highlight that our catering team continue to prepare delicious packed lunches, which can be delivered daily by our catering teams to classrooms in school.

The packed lunches, which offer a choice of two filling options, are available to those eligible for free school meals as well as those who wish to purchase and pre order via SchoolPay.

Find out more about eligibility for and how to apply for free school meals.

In line with council procedures, which reflect increases in costs including inflation, the price of school meals has increased this term by 5p – taking the cost to £2.10 in primary schools and £2.35 in secondary schools.

We will provide a further update on school catering options in due course.

Parent Link News and AGM

A message from Cockenzie PS Parent Link:

Welcome back to school after an unprecedented lockdown experience. The Parent Link have not officially met since March, however Marie & Claire visited the ‘Seed to Plate’ project at the beginning of the summer. ‘Seed to Plate’ have been really busy over lockdown transforming our unique outdoor classroom (The OC). If you have the opportunity please visit them and pick up some of the amazing produce for free.  We would encourage you to follow their page on Facebook to find out what is in season.

We would like to invite all CPS parents and carers to our next meeting on Wednesday 23rd September. This will be carried out virtually with the added benefit of not having to organise childcare. Meetings give a great opportunity to find out what’s happening with the school. You can sit and listen or have your say. There is no pressure to become a regular ‘member’ just dial in. The agenda will include the AGM which will summarise last year. No doubt a topic of discussion will be how we progress to through our new ‘normal’.

We would like to make you aware that ‘Connect’ have a great programme of free online information sessions in September for parents. We have a choice of times for each session, either 1.30pm or 8pm .  Places are free, booking is essential via the links.
