Dementia Friendly East Lothian Annual Gathering 2018: Meeting Centres

Dementia Friendly East Lothian would like to invite PSG Area Partnership Members and groups to attend our Annual Gathering on 11th October at 9.30am in the Maitlandfield Hotel, Haddington to find out more about the potential for developing Meeting Centres in East Lothian and join the start of a conversation about how we build on the work that communities are doing.

Meeting Centres are a local club or resource for people living with mild and moderate dementia and their friends and families and for carers.   They provide support and help people cope to adjusting to life with dementia.  Meeting Centres started in the Netherlands 25 years ago and research shows they have a positive effect on the lives of people with dementia and their families.

Professor Dawn Brooker and her team are developing Meeting Centres around the UK and East Lothian is one of the first areas to be included in the programme.  More info attached and you can see Dawn’s presentation at our conference here: https://memoryfriendly.org.uk/programmes/shifting-paradigms-in-dementia/community-empowerment-and-dementia/dawn-brooker-the-implementation-of-the-dutch-meeting-centres-support-programme/

Developing Meeting Centres must be place-based and rooted in local communities to work, so conversations must happen locally. The  Area Partnerships are well placed to support this process, as they bring together the breadth of interests and focus that make Meeting Centres work.

We’ll be starting off the conversation about Meeting Centres Support Programme at our Gathering on 11th October with a Pioneer Workshop for people who are interested in finding out more.  There are things already in PSG to build on, including the Friendship Group in Cockenzie House, the walking group and social group at Longniddry Community Centre and the work of Longniddry Parish Church. But of course the conversation will continue so it’s not an all or nothing option.
