Summer Reading Challenge

We would like to share with you information about The Summer Reading Challenge 2022.

Each year the Summer Reading Challenge has a different theme. For 2022, The Reading Agency is partnering with Science Museum Group for Gadgeteers, a science and innovation themed Challenge that will spark children’s curiosity about the world around them.

With resources and activities from the Science Museum Group, the Challenge focuses on inspiring children to see the science and innovation behind everyday objects, showing that reading and science are for everyone.

Find out more about Gadgeteers here.

The Challenge will launch in libraries in Scotland and N.I. on Saturday 25 June. Children can also join in the fun online on the official Challenge website.

Physical incentives are available to collect through participating libraries. Reward items, items and Challenge finish dates will vary by location, so we recommend getting in touch with your nearest library to find out more about the Challenge in your area.

Cockenzie’s Growing Garden

For some time now, I have been very keen on the children at Cockenzie Primary School and Nursery involved in growing their own food. We have fantastic resources in the Outdoor Classroom, poly tunnel and raised beds in the garden.

Covid -19 has delayed plans to start utilising these resources but with mitigations lessened and spring in the air, I have been involved with members of the community regarding involving the children in planting and growing.

So, I am sending out a plea for donations for seeds, propagator and any spare bags of compost that you may have – lettuce, radish, spring onion, beetroot, peas,  French beans, carrots, courgettes, onion, shallots, pumpkin, tomato, peppers, cucumber, leeks, cabbage .

Perhaps grandparents, other family members have some seeds too so please share this with them too.  Any donations can be dropped in the garden donation box in the foyer or your child could bring in any donations and give to their teacher.

We hope that this will be the start of a flourishing garden where we grow lots of different food to eat.

Thank you

Ms B

COCKENZIE’S BIG BRILLIANT BOOK SWAP – THURSDAY 3 MARCH

As you know, World Book Day is on Thursday 3 March and the Cockenzie Learners’ Group (Pupil Council) is organising a Big Brilliant Book Swap.  We are asking every child, from Nursery to P7, if they could bring in a book this week and next (before Wednesday 2 March please).   The idea is that every child will swap their book and go home with a new one.

Please make sure that the book your child brings in is good condition and is appropriate for their age. If you have more than one book to donate then please do so (as we may have some children who do not bring in a book).  We do want everyone to go home with a ‘new’ book.

Your child also has been given a World Book Day token to redeem against a book in different retailers.
