CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AWARENESS

Purpose

The course will raise awareness of how young people become involved in child sexual exploitation (CSE), the impact of their experiences and how practitioners can respond to, protect and support those affected.

Prerequisite

Applicants must have previously completed Level 1 Child Protection Awareness and Response training.

Mode of Delivery and Course Dates

This is a half-day (3.5 hours) course which will be delivered virtually by Microsoft Teams.  An e-mail to confirm your place with a link to access the training will be sent out within 7 days of registration.

Course dates are as follows and you will be required to pick one date only:

Wednesday 18th November 2020                      9.30am – 12pm

Monday 7th December 2020                                9.30am – 12pm

Wednesday 13th January 2021                            9.30am – 12pm

Wednesday 17th February 2021                         9.30am – 12pm

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course participants will:

  • Be able to explain the key terminology and definitions in relation to CSE
  • Have an understanding of models of CSE
  • Have an understanding of risks and vulnerabilities of CSE
  • Be aware of strategies available to support young people affected by CSE
  • Have an understanding of grooming and patterns of control
  • Be able to recognise the importance of information sharing and multi-agency partnership in responding to children and young people

HARMFUL SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR

Purpose

The course will raise awareness and support professionals, parents and carers in understanding and managing the needs of children and young people displaying problematic or harmful sexual behaviour (HSB).

Mode of Delivery and Course Dates

This is a half-day (3.5 hours) course, which will be delivered virtually by Microsoft Teams.  An e-mail to confirm your place with a link to access the training will be sent out within 7 days of registration.

Course dates are as follows and you will be required to select one date only:

Wednesday 25th November 2020        9.30am – 12pm

Wednesday 16th December 2020         9.30am – 12pm

Wednesday 20th January 2021              9.30am – 12pm

Wednesday 24th February 2021            9.30am – 12pm

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course participants will:

  • Be able to explain the key terminology and definitions in relation to HSB
  • Have an understanding of how to identify HSB
  • Have an understanding of sub groups within HSB
  • Have an understanding of influencing factors of HSB
  • Have an understanding of implementing safety plans and managing risk
  • Have an overview of technology assisted harmful sexual behaviour (TA-HSB)

Facilitator biography

David Russell

David is a Senior Practitioner with Barnardo’s Early Intervention Service (BEIS), Barnardo’s Scotland (South East), specialising in harmful sexual behaviour and child sexual abuse/exploitation.  David has significant experience in providing assessments and interventions for vulnerable children, adolescents and adults.  David has also created and delivered a variety of training inputs for Barnardo’s South East Locality, City of Edinburgh Council and a variety of external agencies. He also currently sits on the NOTA Scotland Executive Committee, which supports professionals working within the fields of sexual abuse and offending.
