Protecting Children and Young People with Disability

Who is this learning for?

Practitioners working with, or who may work with, children and young people with disabilities. This includes those working to the roles of the Named Person and Lead Professional. The aim of this training is to highlight the vulnerability of disabled children and support practitioners identify and respond to concerns about neglect and harm. Disability awareness and effective communication are important to ensure children and young people with disabilities are safe.

Are there any pre-requisites for attending this course?

Applicants must have previously completed Level 1 Child Protection Awareness Raising and Response training (either through eLearning, virtual, or face-to-face training).

In advance of attending the training, you should ensure you are familiar with The Inter-agency Child Protection Procedures for Edinburgh and the Lothians

What are the learning outcomes?

  • Describe the specific vulnerabilities of disabled children
  • Be aware of the skills needed to communicate and engage with disabled children & young people
  • Discuss the evidence from research
  • Identify barriers to disclosure and detection
  • Develop strategies to minimise vulnerability

How will the training be delivered?

This training will take place on a virtual basis, using Microsoft Teams over two half days. You should only sign up to this course if you are able to attend both days and can access the training via Microsoft Teams.

How do I apply?

Speak to your line manager about whether this course is suitable for your role and level of experience. Demand for this course may be high, therefore you are required to seek your manager’s approval, ensure that you are available on both days, and that you have protected time to attend before enrolling. If over-subscribed we may have to prioritise delegates based on role and remit. You can apply by completing the enrolment form overleaf. The closing date for booking on this course is Tuesday 1st February 2022. Applicants will be notified shortly thereafter if they have been allocated a space on this course.
