East Lothian Early Learning and Childcare Twilight Sessions 2017/18
Session PC09: Good Practice Visit to an Early Learning and Childcare Setting
Session Organisers: Louise Juhl and Wendy Hardie – Support Teachers-East Lothian Early Learning and Childcare
Date: Monday 30th April 2018
Venue: Greengables Nursery, Edinburgh
Focus: Throwing out the plastic; constructing an environment which supports the development of high quality creative play.
Through practitioner enquiry, Catriona Gill will explore the effect of changes made to the nursery environment with the intent of cultivating creativity, developing opportunities for free flow play and creating opportunities for autonomy and choice.
By considering the resources offered and the environment in which they are offered, and observing children’s play, we can see which resources work best to free their imaginations and creativity, and which contain and stifle them. A fundamental shift in the quality of play can be seen as we move away from toys which leave little room for the imagination, towards more natural and open-ended resources. Children become motivated, engaged and deeply involved. Levels of creative problem solving and mature high level socio-dramatic play rise. And children more frequently negotiate complex play situations, use language to create texts and collaborate and co-operate with each other.
