At the recent ‘Making Maths Matter’ Conference on 13th March, Professor Louise Hayward from Glasgow University provided an overview of the International research and current thinking on ‘Closing the achievement gap’ between those in the most and least deprived areas. This focus is a National and Local priority and the overview from Louise provides clear points for reflection as we continue to develop strategies in schools and communities to improve achievement.
‘Making Maths Matter’ is the East Lothian Numeracy and Mathematics Conference aimed at improving achievement in Numeracy and Mathematics and narrowing the attainment gap. The conference is being held at the Marine Hotel in North Berwick on Friday 13th March 2015.
Key speakers are Professor Louise Hayward from Glasgow University who will discuss ‘Narrowing the attainment gap’ and Carol Copstick from Education Scotland who will provide and overview of progress and achievement in Numeracy and Mathematics across Scotland. Learning and Teaching Scotland has developed a Financial Learning Online Scotland Resource Starter Kit to support people who are starting to deliver financial capability to adults and young people.
The Resource Starter Kit activities are available to download from the FLO Scotland website.
This new resource from Learning and Teaching Scotland is packed with ideas and resources and links to help you create learning experiences that bring STEM subjects to your pupils. Using the focus of engineering, the STEM Central website offers stimulating and challenging experiences for sciences, technologies, engineering and maths based around topical contexts such as electric transport and renewable energy.
All the teaching ideas are linked to specific Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes at levels three or four, and the learning journeys are supported with videos, activities and challenges, links to additional resources and advice and information. To help inspire your learners, there are also links to careers resources and the real-life stories of contemporary Scottish engineers.
It enables you to explore the key learning and teaching approaches that can support STEM learning and meets the aims of the ‘Science & Engineering 21 – An Action Plan for Education’ by highlighting the big issues around science today and allowing young people to gain an insight in engineering careers in Scotland.
