Building a Curriculum for West Barns Primary School

West Barns Primary School was inspected in November 2013.  The lead inspector during the feedback challenged the school community to develop the curriculum to make it the ‘West Barns Curriculum’.  Over the past 18 months, the school community has worked to develop the curriculum – moving from ‘a blank wall’ to a shared understanding of the rich West Barns Curriculum experienced by the learners.  Follow the link to the West Barns Curriculum Magazine to look at how the school has outlined the curriculum for parents:

Parentzone Scotland brings together the contents of the previous Parentzone and Scottish Schools Online websites to form a single resource.

In the Find a school section, you will find all the schools information previously held on Scottish Schools Online – contact details for every primary, secondary and special school in Scotland, as well as information on school awards and links to school websites. This section also now includes information on performance of leavers from S4-S6 for each secondary school in Scotland.

The website also contains:

  • information and resources to help you support your child’s learning from early years to beyond school
  • new resources to help you support your child’s learning at home in literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing and science
  • enhanced support for parents of children with additional support needs.

The MacWrite Clan and Literacy Across Learning

To assist you and your students with inquiry-based learning, the school librarians in East Lothian introduce you to the MacWrite Clan. Together they form a research toolkit for students. You can use the whole kit with whole classes or individuals, or use single tools with whole classes or individuals – which ever suits your needs and the learners’ needs best.

There are 2 versions of the MacWrites. One is designed for secondary students, the other for primary students and those secondary students who need additional support.

Each version comes with additional materials to encourage students to become effective researchers. Usually this will be additional copyable resources. Some of these are materials created and used by the school librarians, some are from a pack produced by Aberdeenshire Libraries. You are free to copy and adapt these to suit your requirements. Please acknowledge either East Lothian or Aberdeenshire as the source when you do so. The MacWrites and the Aberdeenshire material are licenced under Creative Commons.
