A very warm welcome back.  In particular, welcome to our new students and staff!

First week back – a few words from Mrs Slowther

It has been a busy and exciting first week back at Dunbar Grammar.  On a personal note, it has been a huge honour to have taken up post as Head Teacher and I am very much enjoying the new role: the Dunbar community is a very special one which I am proud to serve.

The Senior Management Team has seen some changes.  On Monday, Mrs Suzanne Hamilton (formally PT Social Subjects) took up post as Acting Depute Head Teacher.  Mr Richard Maxton joined us for in-service events and also for the first day of term on Wednesday. He will formally take up his post as Depute Head Teacher on Wednesday 22 August.

The work completed over the summer by the expansion team has been absolutely phenomenal and the school opened, on schedule, to students on Wednesday.  I would like to add my personal thanks and appreciation to all involved who made this happen.  The staff and students are very much enjoying their new classrooms in Expressive Arts, Modern Languages, Technologies and Social Subjects.   The building works will continue over the coming months and the new section is due to open later this year.

Finally, there will be events planned in the coming months offering parents/carers the opportunity to come in to school to meet the new Senior Management Team.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact the school office if you would like to discuss any matter.

New S1 Parent/Carer/Students

East Lothian Instrumental Music Services

Parents/carers received information prior to the summer holidays regarding the changes to East Lothian’s Instrumental Service. Returning students (including our new S1s who received lessons in P7) should hand in their application forms to either the school office or their music instructor; alternatively the form can be completed online. Please ask your child to inform their music instructor if they no longer wish to continue their lessons. Information about auditions will be given out shortly to students who would like to receive lessons.

Education Maintenance Allowance

The EMA Application process for the 2018/19 School Session is now open, the application form and guidance notes can be downloaded from here: https://www.eastlothian.gov.uk/emaforms

Applications must be received by 30 September 2018 in order for the payments to be backdated to the start of term.

School Improvement Plan 2018 – 2019

Bistro

Please can students remember their smartcards or PINs as this can cause a delay in the Bistro queues which are set to get longer and longer.  Any student who does not have their card can apply for a new one – remember this also gives you reductions in many retail outlets!  Students who turn up at the Bistro without their card or PIN will be asked to go to the end of the queue.  Those who arrive with money will be sent to the social area to load their accounts.  Students also need their smartcards to have library books issued.

School Uniform

A reminder of the school uniform guidelines (please find below).  Our policy is that if a student is unable to wear the correct uniform they should provide a note from home.

If your son/daughter is not wearing school uniform, we will contact you via text message.

Help Urgently Required – DGSA Prosecco Afternoon Tea & Auction

Hopefully you will have seen that tickets are now on sale for our annual prosecco afternoon tea and auction on 8 September. In the last two years, this popular event has raised nearly £4,000, which has been used to fund a range of items for the school including a 3D printer, sports equipment, school trips etc.  However, this year’s event is at risk of being cancelled.  The association has lost a few members recently as students have left school. We are left with very few active members and we can’t do this on our own!  We desperately need some help – at the event itself, or with donations of raffle prizes, auction items, and sandwiches/home-baking.

Our funds are at an all-time low so we urgently require some new members to help us.  We are a very friendly, informal group who get together no more than twice a term to organise two or three fundraising events in the year and to approve funding requests. The money we raise enhances all our children’s education at the Grammar School.

If you can help in any way for the afternoon tea on 8 September, please contact the school office, Michelle Mallen, Lesley McPheat, Fiona Amos or Katrina Cummings.  If you can’t help at this event but would be happy to join us for other fundraising activities, please let one of us know. Thank you.

Home Economics

Letters regarding S1 and S2 Home Economics payments were given to students on Tuesday 15 August. S3 – S6 letters to follow.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

If you would like to sign up to this year’s group you must collect a letter from Miss Williams during registration or on your way to Maths. Spaces are limited to 42. Students must collect and return a slip which will then go into a hat. The deadline for returns is 21 August.

We launched Battlefields 2019 before the summer. The £100 deposit is now due and there is a Parent/carers’ information evening on Tuesday 28 August.
