Staffing Update

This week we welcomed Anna Malengou, Teacher of Physics, who started with us on Thursday 30 January.

Current S2 students – Personalisation Options for S3

In S1 and S2 students will have experienced Faculty Common Courses and Subject Specialist Courses from all areas of the curriculum. As students progress into S3 we will be asking them to make subject choices within Faculty areas. This will allow students to continue to have as broad an experience as possible in each Faculty before focussing on certificate courses in S4-6. Information went home this week. Please note that the information for CDT has been updated from the booklet that went home. As a result of this change, if there any amendments to course choice returns, students please see Mr Maxton.

Please note that returns are due back on Monday 3 February.

S4, S5 & S6 Parent/Carers’ Consultation Evenings

Letters about our senior phase parents and carers consultation evenings will be issued next week. This year we have changed the format to a combined senior phase event. Therefore parents and carers of students in S4, S5 and S6 can select to attend a consultation evening on Thursday 20 or Monday 24 February.

Current S3, S4 & S5 Subject Choice Parent/Carers’ Information

S3 students and their parents/carers have been invited to an interview where they will have the opportunity to ask any final questions and make final selections.   Letters with the dates and times of each student’s interview will be given to students next week.

Coursing interview letters for S4 and S5 students have been given to students this week. Students and parent/carers are invited to an interview where they will have the opportunity to ask any final questions and make final selections.  Letters regarding these S4 and S5 coursing interviews went home with students this week: S4 and 5 Interview Options – Parent Letter

Road Safety

Many parents and members of the local community have expressed their concerns about road safety at the Countess Road crossing next to the John Muir Campus. As you may have seen, on Wednesday 22 January, Mrs Slowther met with Mrs Gillanders, Head Teacher at Dunbar Primary School, S6 students, representatives from East Lothian Council and Dunbar Community Council and local Police Officers to look at the problems at this crossing and discuss options for making it, and the surrounding area, safer.

It was agreed that over the next few months, engineers at East Lothian Council would look at a number of measures to improve road safety in this area. Both schools want to work with students, parents, residents and the Council to reach a solution which they are happy with. As with all road schemes, there may be some delays as it goes through any required planning processes, but you will be kept informed and have a chance to comment on the measures put forward.

In the near future, students from both schools will be filming the crossing on a Friday lunchtime when it is at its busiest so that everyone can see the problems at their worst. It was noticed last Wednesday that some students and parents were not obeying road safety rules.  We are very proud of the number of students who walk, cycle and scoot to school and want you all to stay safe.

Parents and Carers of S4,5,6 Music Students

We will be holding our annual DGS Music Department Senior Recital Performance on Wednesday 5 February 4:30pm

This is a live performance from our S4,5,6 Music pupils in the new social space.

A common concern among students sitting practical exams is how nervous they become when asked to perform in front of the examiner.  The Senior Recital performance is designed to allow pupils to combat these nerves in a relaxed and supportive environment.  The event will start at 4:30pm and should finish at approximately 5:30pm.  We would appreciate your support in both encouraging your son/daughter to take part in this event, and in you coming along to hear the performances.

A letter was sent home with your son/daughter on Wednesday 22 January: Recital Evening Letter

Revised School Dates

Following the decision taken by the Full Council at its meeting on 29 October 2019, a consultation exercise was undertaken with parents/carers in relation to an additional day’s leave on 8 May 2020 to coincide with VE Day 75 celebrations. The outcome of this consultation was an overwhelming support for an additional day’s school closure on Friday 8 May 2020 with the retention of the already agreed school holiday closure on Monday 4 May 2020. Approval was sought from Scottish Government for this additional day’s closure and this approval has now been received. For clarity, schools will be closed on Monday 4 May 2020 and on Friday 8 May 2020. The attached were given to all students this morning:
