- Corona Advice – message from Lesley R Brown, Chief Operating Officer (Education) at East Lothian Council
You will be aware that the continually evolving situation relating to Covid-19 is causing significant local, national and international challenges. You may also be aware that the UK government held a Cobra meeting yesterday afternoon. The purpose of a Cobra meeting is to discuss high-level coordination and decision-making in the face of a crisis. Covid-19 is now considered to be pandemic.
Following this meeting, the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, stated that the decision has been taken that we have now moved from a contain phase into the delay phase. She also confirmed that schools will remain open for the time being but that this will be kept under constant review.
Any decisions about SQA examinations would be made nationally and the most recent SQA update can be found at https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/93499.html
Over this week, we have made arrangements to ensure students have access to digital learning resources if these were to be required. These are detailed below:
Students in S1, S2 and S3
Work for each class would be set via Show my Homework (https://dunbarg.satchelone.com/school/home). Today we offered support to any students who are having any issues with logging in to this platform and re-issued passwords to any students who our records show have not logged in for some time.
We would also encourage all students to be using BBC Bitesize https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/zy4qn39
Students in S4, S5 and S6
Google Classrooms are set up for every senior class and a full list of codes will be shared with students. Work for each class would be shared on the relevant Google Classroom. Teacher may also share links to online resources/videos. All students have access to their EduBuzz emails and would be able to communicate with their class teachers and ask questions via this method.
Scholar is an online resource created and supported by Heriot Watt University, and follows SQA guidelines and past papers to support home learning in numerous subject areas. There are tutorials, online videos that can be streamed to ‘teach’ topics from home or be used for revision and exam style questions. This resource is also reactive, so you can type in answers which are then electronically marked, with feedback given for incorrect or responses requiring greater depth. Access to Scholar is via https://scholar.hw.ac.uk. All S4/5/6 students were re-issued with their log in details today.
We would also encourage all students to be using the SQA past papers (https://www.sqa.org.uk/pastpapers/findpastpaper.htm) along with BBC Bitesize (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize)
If you have any questions around this please contact the school on 01368 863 339 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
We are aware that we have planned trips to Belgium/France and California in May/June. We are liaising with East Lothian Council and they have advised that we are to follow NHS and Government advice and take advice from the travel companies involved. No decisions will be made until closer to the time of these trips as the overall situation is changing quickly. We will keep parents/carers posted as soon as we have any further information.
