Update from East Lothian Council: Hubs & Teacher Return to School Update
Please see our update for 29 May 2020: Friday 29th May
Scholar is an online learning platform developed by Heriot Watt University. It provides course learning materials and revision resources for a variety of courses at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. Not all subjects are catered for on Scholar but a lot of them are.
Students can access Scholar by going to https://scholar.hw.ac.uk and logging in using a personal username and password. New S4 students were sent an email today from Mr White with those login details. New S5 and S6 students should use the same username and password from last session. If a student has forgotten their username or password they should email Mr White.
The videos below provide an introduction to Scholar from one of the school coordinators and information about how to login.
Duke of Edinburgh Update
At this time of year we are normally packing kit and getting ready to head off on expedition. Given the current situation all expeditions were cancelled following advice from East Lothian Council and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.
We continue to follow their advice and are looking into options for the next academic year to allow students to complete their assessed expeditions.
It is likely that this will be in the summer term if this is safe to do so.
Bronze – S3 students who have just moved into S4
You have an outstanding Bronze Assessed Expedition to complete. Advice from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards scheme is as follows:
– At Bronze level, participants who have completed their Skills, Physical and Volunteering sections – achieving the 2020 DofE Certificate of Achievement – and progress to Silver, will be treated as if they have completed the previous Award level. This means they’ll only have to complete six months of activity, not 12.
– Participants who do this will be able to use their Silver practice expedition as their qualifying expedition at Bronze, enabling them to achieve both their Bronze and Silver Awards.
This means you will get your Bronze Award at some point and will be able to progress to Silver if you wish too.
Silver – S4 students who have just moved into S5
We are looking to complete a Silver assessed expedition with you before you go into S6 so that you can progress to Gold should you wish too.
Gold – students who are leaving school.
We are looking at a possible East Lothian Gold group/groups to complete the final expedition. We will keep you posted.
New Groups for 2021
New Bronze – S2 students who will be moving forward to S3.
Normally we begin the application process now and finish the selection in August. Our plan is to delay recruitment until post Christmas.
New Gold – S5 students who have just moved to S6
We will be looking to start the award post Christmas.
If any family is currently worried needing to get Free School Meal support or worried about being able to afford uniform in the future, please see the East Lothian Council clothing grant application: https://www.eastlothian.gov.uk/info/210557/schools_nurseries_and_learning/11899/free_school_meals_and_clothing_grants/4
When we return to school, we know many students will have grown out of their uniform – please do not throw it away but keep it and donate to our uniform bank on our return to school.
We keep a supply of school uniform at DGS to support students who are struggling to get hold of uniform.
