Update 9 October 2020

SQA Update

On Wednesday 7th October, The Deputy First Minister announced a number of measures for the awarding of National Courses at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher in 2020-21. There will be no external assessment of National 5 courses this year – either by an exam or by coursework. Higher and Advanced Higher externally assessed exams, including the completion of coursework where appropriate, will remain as planned.

More information can be found on the SQA website https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/95157.html

We will have virtual assemblies for al S4/5/6 next week.  As we receive further guidance from the SQA, we will keep students and their parents and carers updated.

Awards Ceremony

On Thursday 8th October we filmed our awards ceremony.  This recognised the achievements of many students from all year groups.  This will be screened to all students next Friday, 16th October. It will also be available for parents and carers to view online from the same day.

DGSC Meeting Monday 12th October

We will be holding the AGM and Parent Council (DGSC) meeting on Google meet on Monday 12th October from 7pm – 8.30pm.  If you would like to attend please email parentcouncil@dunbargrammar.elcschool.org.uk and you will be sent a meeting invite.

Reusable Face Coverings

We have been really impressed with how well our students have adapted to wearing face coverings in school.  However, we would like to encourage students to consider wearing a reusable covering.  Many are wearing single use masks and we are issuing considerable numbers of these each day to students.  We are acutely aware of the environmental impact of single use masks.  Our pupil support department has a supply of fabric masks which are available to students if they do not have their own.

Work for students who are self-isolating

If students are absent due to isolating, work can be found on their Google Classrooms. However, it is important to remember that our teachers have full timetables so may take a day or so to be able to reply to any individual queries or emails from students.

Dress Down Day Friday 16th October

The Charities committee are organising a dress down day (with a suggested donation of £1) on Friday 16th October.   All money collected will be donated to the Wave Project https://www.waveproject.co.uk/

Children First

Children First would to like to highlight their parentline. Parentline provides emotional, practical and financial to families. They are able to provide one off bits of advice or continued advice and support over an extended time.

If you as a parent/carer are struggling for any reason, see this leaflet: Parentline leaflet East Lothian

Bistro and Hub

A reminder to students that they must have their cards topped up before they purchase food at the Bistro or Hub.

If they do not have their cards, they should know their PIN before they get to the till.

Thank you – the Bistro team

Stars of the Week

We have launched an initiative where students and staff can be nominated for a Star of the Week award based on how they represent our RISE values – Respect Inclusion Support and Effort.

The winners for this week are below:

David Robertson (SUPPORT)

A student nomination said ‘Mr Robertson was really good at keeping our class positive for the maths test and supported us really well’

A parent contacted the school this week to say ‘My S1 son has never enjoyed maths, and has always struggled with it.  However, since getting Mr Robertson he is coming home telling me how much he is enjoying it and how nice Mr Robertson is to him, helping him understand it.’

Calum Mackie (SUPPORT)

‘He was there for me when I was struggling throughout the day and helped calm me down and did his best to help me and it was very kind’

‘Mr Mackie stayed after school to help me with my upcoming Ruae test’

‘Mr Mackie is a great teacher who works really hard’

‘Mr Mackie is an amazing member of the department. Really committed and goes the extra, extra , extra mile for his students and his colleagues. He is truly wonderful.’

Callum Wood (Effort)

Callum keeps impressing me EVERY DAY in class. He is so hard working, helps his peers, always volunteers for answers in class and his knowledge is unbelievable. Out of all my classes, he is probably the most hard working and focused student and I am positive he will achieve brilliantly no matter what he decides to do in the future. Well done Callum, you are truly a star!

Leah Young (Effort)

On a recent Maths test Leah not only gained 100%, she also gave exemplar solutions with every step of working very clearly presented – she is doing a fantastic job! I was very impressed 🙂
