Update 10 September 2021

Documents home this week:

Since the return to school in August there have been considerable changes in the processes for managing COVID cases in schools compared to those in place in June.

These changes have caused some confusion.

NHS Lothian have asked us to send you this letter which is intended to explain and clarify the processes to avoid further confusion: Letter to Schools Sept 2021

Extra-Curricular Clubs

Please see the following link for our extra-curricular clubs on offer to all students. Pleases note that more may be added throughout the year.

Face Coverings

We have been really impressed with how students are coping wearing face coverings in school and are delighted that compliance with this has been really high. We have always encouraged students to bring their own face covering but will supply one if they have forgotten.

We are currently issuing around 3,000 disposable face coverings each week.  The environmental impact of this is significant.  We would like to appeal to all students and their families to use a reusable face covering if possible. We will of course continue to supply single use masks but as a coastal, zero waste town, we recognise the importance of promoting more environmentally friendly alternatives.

LFD Testing

This week, Mrs Slowther and Mrs Gillespie led an online assembly about lateral Flow Device (LFD) testing.  The importance of both testing and recording results was stressed. The link for recording results was shared with all students by email https://www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result

From next week, tests will be delivered to registration classes for students who have signed up to the testing programme. Students over the age of 12 can sign up themselves and those under 12 require parental consent.  If any student would like to sign up, but has not already done so should complete the form: online consent form.  If any student requires more test kits before the delivery system starts, they should go to the medical room at break or lunch.

Road Safety Update

This week Mrs Slowther met the East Lothian Council Crossing Supervisor at Countess Road to observe students traveling home by bike or on foot at the end of the day.  On the whole, students were being very careful at his busy junction.

However, if your young person cycles to school we would like to take this opportunity to ask parents to reiterate the importance of wearing a helmet and always following the rules of the road.

Donations of Unused Uniform

We keep a supply of laundered uniform items in school for students who may require access to these.  If your young person has any items of uniform which they no longer use and is still in good condition, these can be donated by handing them into the school office.

Date of the next Parent Council (DGSC) meeting

The next meeting of the parent council is on Wednesday 6th October at 7pm.  If you would like to attend, please email parentcouncil@dunbargrammar.elcschool.org.uk  and a meeting link will be sent to you.

Stars of the Week

STAFF

A joint nomination…………

Ms White (Modern Studies) and Ms McDonald (Geography)  SUPPORT

Please can I nominate both Ms McDonald and Ms White for Star of the Week.  They are fantastic teachers and unbelievably supportive colleagues.  They have welcomed all the new staff to the team and also step up to organise and lead things.  I’m so amazed at how they’ve steadied the ship and calmly organised the rest of the team.  I’d love them to be recognised as stars of the week. Thank you !

STUDENTS

Grant Gilchrist (Support)

Grant alerted me to a member of the class who was feeling unwell. I asked him to go and get Mrs Martin for me next door, which was a lot of responsibility since he had not yet met her! It was the very first time he was even in the kitchen environment. He was polite and responsible and very concerned about the pupil. I would have been lost without his quick action. Well done Grant, you are truly a star!

Seren Malone (Effort)

Seren means ‘STAR’ in Welsh and that is absolutely the correct description of Seren. She is courteous and friendly toward me each and every time I have seen her in and out of class. She has been incredibly helpful when I have asked questions of the class (e.g. about period times, where equipment is, how to navigate the Chromebooks) which has really helped me to settle in as a new member of staff. I have to also commend her on always contributing to class. Thank you Seren!

Information Update

A pack is going home with students over the next few weeks containing a PC1 and an Annual Data Check form which is required to be checked by parent/carers, updated as appropriate, signed and returned. Packs will contain photo permission forms and school closure forms if we do not hold a copy on file.

If you have no email address, it is essential that you inform the school. Where this is the case, the weekly email information is automatically updated on our website.

NHS Flu Vaccinations

The deadline for returning the vaccination forms has been extended. Please return these to the school office asap.
