This is a working list of the often confusing acronyms and terminology used in Pupil Support in Scotland.
The links for each have been selected for their usefulness but are by no means exhaustive.
GIRFEC – Getting it Right for Every Child (overall framework)
Wellbeing indicators (previously known as SHANARRI indicators)
LAC – Looked After Child/young person (this could be at home, away from home or kinship care)
SFL – Support For Learning department
ASN – Additional Support Needs
ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder
VI – Visual impairment
EAL – English as an Additional Language
IEP – Individual Education Plan – An IEP sets short and long term targets for the child or young person
CSP – Coordinated Support Plan. A CSP also sets targets for the child or young person. However, in a CSP the child or young person needs significant support of people outside education, such as health workers, in order to help them learn to their full potential.
CAMHS – Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. focus on the needs of children and young people. They are multidisciplinary teams that often consist of:
- psychiatrists
- psychologists
- social workers
- nurses
- support workers
- occupational therapists
- psychological therapists – this may include child psychotherapists, family psychotherapists, play therapists and creative art therapists
- primary mental health link workers
- specialist substance misuse workers

SLT – Speech and Language Therapy
