Accelerated Reading Programme.
Our aim is to develop lifelong readers with our Accelerated Reader Programme. Accelerated Reader is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice. With AR, we create a reading programme to meet the needs of our students.
Using information generated by the software, (see STAR testing) we help students select books that are difficult enough to keep them challenged, but not too difficult to cause frustration. It helps teachers to monitor students’ vocabulary growth, literacy skills development and reading skills.
Our Aims are to:
- Engage students with reading
- Develop a lifelong love of reading in our students
- Motivate students of all ages to read more, suitably challenging, books
- Raise literacy standards for students of all ages and abilities
Accelerated Reader allows personalised practice and provides the data needed to manage that practice.
Our students can select books of an appropriate difficulty that also interest them. Everyone enjoys reading for knowledge and pleasure, but not everyone realises how much you learn by reading. Our students take fun motivational quizzes to test their comprehension of the books they have read, aiming for benchmarks and targets set by their teachers. This enables them to understand just how much learning takes place by their reading.
Motivate students for learning. Students self-selected their reading at the optimal level resulting in success. Students are motivated to read constantly – in class, at break times, during homework and reading clubs in SFL where our staff are available to offer support and guidance.
We ensure our students are guided to books where the difficulty is neither too hard nor too easy – the level at which optimal learning takes place.
