Play 4 Today – 2012

Posted by pevans on January 31, 2012

Due to workload commitment it has been decided to postpone Play for Today for 2012.  We realise that Play 4 Today is eagerly awaited by all the childcare providers, but we have taken the decision that if we are going to do it we would rather do it right than provide a sub standard version.  Watch this space for more details

Early Years Conference

Are We Securely Attached

March 17th  2011

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh

The Early Years and Childcare Team are once again organising an Early Years Conference.  The Conference is organised and subsidised by the Early Years and Childcare Team at East Lothian Council and aims to raise awareness of the critical importance of Early Years development in improving children’s life chances

 Speakers at the conference are:

Robin Balbernie

Robin Balbernie is currently Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist in Gloucestershire CAMHS. He works with the Children’s Centres in Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean as lead of the Secure Start team, providing an infant mental health service. He is also involved in work with the Intensive Baby Care Unit at Gloucester Royal Hospital and has been running supervision groups for health visitors for over 20 years.

He has a special interest in early interventions, originally arising from his work with adopted children, and is on the Committee of the Association of Infant Mental Health (UK) and is also a member of the Young Minds’ Policy and Strategy Advisory Group.”

 Suzanne Zeedyk

Suzanne Zeedyk is currently Senior Lecturer in Developmental Psychology at Dundee University. Suzanne’s work focuses on parent-infant relationships. She is frequently invited to speak to groups of parents and professionals on the importance of such relationships, and how babies’ early experiences influence the development of their brain, bodies and psyche.

She works closely with organisations such as the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, HomeStart, Kids Taskforce and a number of city councils. Her key aim is to increase awareness of the extent to which, when making decisions about the care we give to children, we are also making decisions about the kind of society we wish to build.

The day will be facilitated by Susan Deacon who was MSP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh from 1999 to 2007 and was Scotland’s first cabinet minister for Health and Community Care.  She holds a range of advisory and non executive roles with organisations in the private, public and third sectors.  She has been a consistent advocate for the importance of children’s early years and is widely known and respected across Scottish political and public life

Who should attend?  Anyone working with young children and their families, or who has responsibility for strategic planning for Early Years services

Contact Pauline Evans 01620 827141  pevans@eastlothian.gov.uk if you require more information

Early Years & Childcare Seminar ‘Right From the Start’

Posted by pevans on May 15, 2009

The Early Years and Childcare Team at East Lothian Council hosted a conference for Early Years Practitioners entitled “Right From the Start”.  Speakers at the Conference which was attended by around 130 delegates were: Lynn McNair, Head of Centre at Cowgate Under 5’s Centre, Lian Higgins, Nursery Nurse at Cowgate, Professor Tina Bruce CBE, Visiting Professor of Early Childhood Studies at Roehampton University and Peter Dixon, and Educationalist and Poet.

Delegates included a range of representatives including childminders, playworkers from pre school playgroups, after school clubs and private nurseries, staff from nursery schools and classes, health visitors, community development staff and voluntary organistion staff.  The basic message the speakers was leave your children to play and encourage them to use their imagination to think for themselves instead of structuring play for them.
