## It’s a solid… It’s a liquid… It’s Oobleck

As part of our project on solids, liquids and gases we have been learning about their properties and sorting lots of items into their correct categories, they are either a solid, a liquid or a gas … and then along comes Oobleck to confuse the situation.    Today in P3 we were making Oobleck which can behave like a solid and  a liquid without a change in temperature.

We tested it outside by putting some in a bag and adding a fresh egg, we then dropped it from a height to see if the Oobleck would make a solid around the egg and protect it from breaking.  We managed  a drop of 2.6 metres, the egg finally broke when thrown directly at a wall.   Very messy science but great fun!

## A very cute visitor to P3

P3 had a visit from Shaun the Lamb today.  Thanks so much to Alessandra’s mum and aunt for bringing Shaun along for us to see.  He was so cute, fluffy and extremely well behaved, what a lovely start to our morning.

## Solids, liquids and gases in P3

P3 have been continuing to learn about solids, liquids and gases.  We have looked at how materials change when they are heated or cooled.  We used thermometers to check the temperature of different materials including ourselves.  We have also been learning about the density of liquid.  We had a selection of different liquids to work with and had to predict which ones we thought were more dense than others.  We did really well in our predictions but had a few surprises when we tried the experiment and seen how the liquids behaved when poured on top of one another.  We were also discussing how oil and water don’t mix even if you really shake them together.

## The Science of Chocolate in P3

P3 are working hard on their project on solids, liquids and gases.  Today we used the science of chocolate to help us understand how a solid can change to a liquid using heat.  We melted chocolate squares and seen the process happening before our very eyes.  We then used the melted chocolate to make crispie cakes and then watched as the chocolate became a solid again as it cooled down.    We used our learning about arrays to help us count the number of crispie cakes we had made and the best bit was getting to eat them, yummy!

## Blossoming in P3

P3 have been observing the blossom trees in the park for the last few weeks.  We have enjoyed watching them change from beautiful trees with masses of bright colourful blossom to trees which are almost bare with only some dark dying blossom left.

We have observed the shape and size of the trunks of the trees and how the branches spread out to create lovely structures.  We used our observations to create these stunning blossom tree paintings.

We completed our paintings in stages focusing first on the creating the trunk and branches and then we added our blossom using paint and tin foil instead of brushes.  The look beautiful on display in the corridor and are a lasting reminder of the stunning blossom trees in the park.

## Rock Stars in P3

P3 have been outdoors again – the weather was not so good this time, very damp and misty so we had to finish our lesson indoors.

We were looking for different types of rocks – we didn’t think we would find many in the school grounds but to our surprise there were loads.  We then spent time sorting our rocks into different categories, size, shape, colour etc.  We then used them to make some rock structures.

## Leaf to Leaf in P3

It was Lily’s turn to pick the outdoor activity she picked leaf to leaf so we have been outdoors collecting different kinds of leaves.  We were looking for different shapes, sizes and colours.  We have been trying to find out what kinds of leaves they are so we can discover what trees we have around the school.  We then made some lovely artworks by drawing and rubbing the leaves.

## Invent-a-nature in P3

P3 took their learning outdoors this afternoon, what a gorgeous day to be outside.  Phoenix picked a card from our outdoor learning bowl, our activity today was called invent-a-nature.  We had to pick up different pieces of nature and think about what other ways they could be used.  We worked in pairs and groups and collected lots of interesting natural materials.  We then got to inventing, we had lots of different constructions going on, including a step ladder for the birds so they could enter a safe area away from any predators, a fairy house and a top notch 5 star bug hotel.  We also seen some sparrows who were very busy in the bird boxes just outside our classroom, we think they may have chicks so we shall be keeping a close eye on them.

## P3 just love bird watching

After taking part in the RSPB  Big Birdwatch P3 have been finding out more about local birds.  We have been learning about the different parts of birds, looking at the variety of colours in their feathers and learning some facts about them.  We created some detailed line drawings of the birds we had seen and wrote little fact files about them.  We then put them on display in our paper plate tree for everyone to enjoy.

## Update on P3 in 2019

We have had a busy start to the new year in P3.  Our boys have been continuing with their football research the project gets bigger every time.

We have been learning about money in our maths work, sorting and ordering coins and playing games to get us more confident at giving change.

Our class bucket is doing a great job of making us feel good when we read out the messages every week.

We have a focus on improving our fitness and stamina levels in PE just now and are really pushing ourselves hard at circuit training every week.

We are getting through our class novel Fantastic Mr Fox and have used it for creating some drama work, illustrations and descriptive writing.  The class have produced some brilliant work.

For Burn’s Day we were looking at tartan and created our own patterns.  We have also taken part in the RSPB Birdwatch we enjoyed being outdoors as citizen scientists gathering data to input on the RSPB website.  We finished this by designing and  painting our own wooden birds to take home.
