# Shapes everywhere in P1

P1 have had a busy afternoon learning about 2D shapes.  We read the story “Mouse Shapes” which gave us some inspiration to make our own shape pictures.  We also went on a shape hunt and found lots of very interesting shapes in the playground.

# What we have been learning so far in P1

We have had a busy start to P1, learning sounds and numbers everyday.  So for the last few days we have had a little bit of a break to make sure we are remembering everything we have learnt so far.  We have been practising all the sounds we have been learning, all 18 of them, we have been trying to blend them to make words.  We have also been using our numbers, recording them on our whiteboards and putting them in the correct order.  What a great job P1 well done!!

# Learning about doubles in P1

P1 have been learning about doubles in maths.  We have been using dominoes, dice, blocks, spinners and lots of games to help us learn our doubles.  We are getting very good at doubles up to 5 and beyond.

# Maths morning in P1

# Lots happening in P1

It has been a busy few weeks in P1.  We have been focusing on our addition number stories in maths and we are all getting so good at them.  We have been outdoors with our maths and working in small groups in class.  We have also been learning about money and have set up a class shop.  Our topic this term is toys. We read the story Kipper’s Toy Box and met the character “sock thing”.  We all made our own sock puppets just like “sock thing”  each with their own unique name and character.  It was a rather messy task but thanks to the extra help from Claire and Maia’s gran we all managed.  They look wonderful!!  We have also spent some time outdoors reading with our P7 buddies.

# Data collection in P1

We have had a busy afternoon in P1 learning how to collect and record information.  We first of all learned how to use tally marks to record information and then we displayed this information on a chart.  We worked in pairs so we had someone to share our ideas with. Each pair had a selection of different bears, we had to sort them, then record how many of each kind we had.  We then displayed this information on a chart.  This was quite tricky work especially remembering how to record 5 as a tally.

# Catch up on P1 news

We have been learning our number stories to 5 for maths in P1.  We are all becoming much more confident about finding the number partners to 5 and getting really fast at recalling the number facts.  We have been using our number tunnel to help us work out our number stories and then recording them on our whiteboards.

We have also had an interactive workshop from the Museum of Flight.  We found out about flying around the world, we visited lots of different countries and found out interesting facts about them and then we made our own planes.

Now that we are all becoming such fabulous readers we enjoy sharing our reading books with our class mates.  We spend time each week reading our new reading books to our class reading partners it is a great way to build on our reading skills.

# P1 update

We have been very busy in P1 since coming back after the holidays. We have started a new topic about Scotland. We looked at the repeating patterns in tartan and had a go ourselves at designing our own tartan trying to keep to the pattern, we then made our tartan samples into kilts. We read the story about Hamish the Hairy Haggis and designed and made our own haggis and some haggis bashers. We have also been looking at maps and learning about how important the key is for a map. We had a go at making our own maps of our own Scottish islands and added a key to help us read the maps. In maths we are beginning to learn addition and subtraction we have been playing the apple game in pairs to help with this.

# P1 and P7 BUDDIES

A rainbow of Numeracy Skills and lots of Stars in Primary One!

As well as Paired Reading, the P1 and P7 buddies are involved in other exciting activities. Today, we were concentrating on the whole Dunbar Cluster Initiative “Together We Count“. Well done P1 for being able to write down 0 – 10 so well and thereafter meet the huge variety of challenges the P7 pupils then set you! Each and every one of you managed to earn your red badge which stands for “ordering of numbers”. So congratulations to you all and well done to the P7 assessors!
