Macmerry Primary – tasty science

Pre March 2020

This week P5 walked 2.5miles around the local area. We stopped to have hot chocolate. We used our knowledge from our science lesson this week to classify the powder as soluble. We also admired the brilliant view! A great session! #p5outside

This is one day of a longer term teaching utilising outdoor space accessible form the school by walking. Every Friday morning the whoel class knows and is prepared to go outside. They walk to the same venue every week in order that we can observe the seasonal changes as the year progresses. Activities at the venue always include a practical STEM activity. So far we have included making fire/ charcoal paint/ tower construction/ air powered rockets/ radio messaging/ natural measurement.

Active active learning

Today’s outdoor learning at North Berwick Children’s Hub ; progressed our orienteering training , built bug ‘hotels’

Orienteering is a great activity for making young people think and work collaboratively through sharing of knowledge. Added to that it also involves moving quickly over a variety of terrain. Definitely the thinking sport!

Elphinstone Primary Local Residential

Pre 2020

Blue sky day with @Elphytweets canoeing down the River Tweed as part of their #BrilliantResidentials A week of local #learningadventures led by school staff with support from ourselves & @ELCrangers A great model of P7 camp.

The week long camp which included a full day river trip down the River Tweed, camping local to Peebles, local adventure walk, cooking and preparing own food, wildlife watching, problem solving. This great week was led by school staff with ELOLS support. It was designed with the young people and schools staff ensured taht it linked directly with learning already happening at school. The whole experience was then used subsequently back in school to reinforce learning.
