Winter adventure residential weekends in the Cairngorms

We are back at the fine facilities of Badaguish in the Cairngorms National Park and offering a choice of 2 winter weekends adventures for secondary pupils across East Lothian schools.

Dates … This year’s dates are 28th Feb – 1st Mar (S2/3) and 13th – 15th Mar (s5/6). To book go here , and select the ‘For Pupils’ tab.

Who can attend …We run two weekends one for S3/4 and another for S5/6. Max group size is 12 per trip. We are after pupils, plus any teachers or volunteers to assist and gain experience.

Why attend … The Scottish winter mountains can be a challenging environment.  They are an excellent place to help you gain skills and confidence. We will help you experience some amazing conditions and hopefully learn some new winter skills – such as using an ice-axe and crampons, or for those that can already ski, maybe some touring off-piste on skis.  And as at least two of us teach Geography there’ll be plenty of glacial features and processes explored and discussed.

Logistics … we will meet after school on the first day of each trip from the Outdoor Learning Service in Musselburgh, returning on the evening of the last day.

Activities will be dependent on the conditions, they will include …
Planning your winter day  – weather forecast, snow-pack, route-choice, what to take? Winter navigation,  technical skills – use of winter boots, ice-axe, crampons Snow craft – building emergency shelters, snow holes Avalanche awareness and emergency response. Winter hill-walking.  Snowshoeing – dependent on conditions. Ski-touring – very dependent on participants prior experience and conditions.  We can discuss when you arrive

What’s included …
Self-catering accommodation in 4, 6 or 8 bed dorms
Instruction and coaching from ELC OLS staff
All technical and safety equipment, including shell clothing and winter boots.

What to bring … See here for a kit-list Linen and bedding is provided but you need so bring a towel! Enthusiasm and a smile

Cost  … £95 fully inclusive of equipment, food, instruction and transport

Interested … Book and pay online by going here, , and selecting the ‘For Pupils‘ tab.  We will then email out joining instructions directly to all participants.

Scottish Winter ‘Brilliant Residential’ 2020

Open to any East Lothian Council School from P5 and older

  • Arrive – Tues 4th February from 4.30pm onwards – evening meal provided
  • Depart Thursday 6th February afternoon around 3pm

A 2 night stay at Badaguish Lodges in the Cairngorm National Park. Accommodation is in a 17 bedded lodge at Badaguish. The residential will be staffed by East Lothian Outdoor Learning Teachers (Martyn, Liz and Andy). The emphasis on the days will be developing character and resilience through undertaking journeys within the national park. These journeys will be made on foot. Depending upon the environmental conditions/ weather this could be snowshoeing/skiing/walking. We may find ourselves attempting to reach a summit/lochan/bothy. We may find ourselves developing our snow pack awareness/ navigation/ local history/ ecology skills and knowledge.

A major part of the residential will be our communal living. Everyone will be involved in aspects of cooking/cleaning/ entertaining as we develop social skills beyond the classroom.

Is that my breath freezing?

The school will be require to provide…

  • 12 young people
  • at least one member of establishment staff
  • £20 per person
  • transport to and from Aviemore (minibus can be borrowed from Outdoor Learning for zero cost – driver not included!)
  • Complete a curricula outdoor learning request form detailing how the residential will be evaluated.

This is a heavily subsidised residential opportunity made possible through professional colleagues from across the industry. The earlier part of the week your Outdoor Learning service delivers professional learning to members of BAIML and MTA. Payment made for this by participants all goes towards subsidising the cost of this residential to your pupils.

Only twenty minutes to find our victim!

If you think you may have a cohort of pupils that would benefit from such an experience then please complete a curricula outdoor learning request form and submit to the outdoor learning team as soon as possible. For an initial informal chat please call and speak to Martyn, Andy or Liz

Paddlesport Evening for Educators

A beautiful evening with some teaching staff on some paddlepsort professional learning. Join us next Tuesday evening 4 till 6pm for some quality on the water time with some first class canoe/kayak/SUP coaching

The Adventure Academy needs you!

What is the Adventure Academy… A group of pupils from across East Lothian Council  schools who meet and work together on a range of outdoor adventurous activities including rock-climbing, orienteering, canoeing, kayaking and mountain sports.

When and where  … From September 2019  fortnightly on Thursdays after school 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the Outdoor Learning Service base in Musselburgh.  Monthly weekend day trips, a winter weekend residential and a Summer expedition in the last week of the year.

Who is it for … Any S2-S4 pupil who wants to be inspired, stretched and challenged by outdoor adventures.  It’s for anyone who’s interested in outdoor pursuits as a hobby, or  maybe even considering a future working in the outdoors.

What will it cost …  A nominal charge will be made for transport, entry fees and any residential costs incurred.   We do not anticipate these being more than a couple of pounds per session. The residential will be approximately £100 dependent on the accommodation required.  There is no cost for staff time or equipment.

What will I get out of it … learn new skills,  maybe gain some awards, work as a team, build your resilience and confidence. Have adventures!

How do I apply … download the application form from here and return to  Including the words ‘Adventure Academy’ in the subject.  Numbers are limited!

I look forward to hearing from you and will respond to your application after the Summer holidays
