Letter from Head of Education

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing to provide you with an update in respect of the leadership and management of Haddington Infant School following the retiral, this week, of Mrs Swinton, Head Teacher.

With effect from Monday 23 October 2017, Mrs Kirsty Murray, Depute Head Teacher, will take up the position of Acting Head Teacher of the school. The reason behind a temporary appointment is the Education Service is planning to undertake a formal statutory consultation on a proposal to establish one Primary School, encompassing the current Haddington Infant and Kings MeadowPrimary Schools in Haddington. This consultation is planned to commence in January 2018.

Our priority is to maintain high-quality education provision for all pupils at the existing schools. It is increasingly common for one single school to provide education to pupils all the way through from

Nursery – P7. The main change from the present arrangement is that there would be one shared management team overseeing the learning and teaching for all children, with staff at all levels of the school working closely together. The present school buildings would continue to be utilised.

It is important to stress that no decisions have been made at this stage. Following the statutory consultation period all views will be considered and a decision would then require to be made by the full East Lothian Council. If approved Scottish Government Ministers would then reserve the right to ‘call-in’ the proposal for further consideration.

I have been in touch with the Chairs of the respective Parent Councils to indicate how we will be moving forward and I will provide further information and timings regarding the consultation process in due course as we are keen that all parents, carers and the wider school community have the opportunity to comment.

Although St Mary’s RC Primary School are part of the shared campus of schools and work jointly in the Haddington schools’ cluster, they will be indirectly affected by this arrangement.

Kind regards

Fiona Robertson

Head of Education
