Yellow Woods Challenge

Innerwick Primary School is one of the schools within the East Lothian area who are taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge.

 

This is an environmental competition run by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust and our local council.

 

The aim is to recycle the highest number of old Yellow Pages directories per pupil and win cash prizes for our school. And for every pound Yellow Pages awards to schools, they give a matching pound to the Woodland Trust.

 

When your new Yellow Pages directory is delivered, please help our school and the environment by recycling your old one. You can recycle the old Yellow Pages by placing it into your kerbside box, but before doing so, please take off the cover of the old one and bring it into school! 
If you do not have a kerbside recycling box, please just bring the whole of your Yellow Pages into school and we will place it into our recycling bags for collection.  
Please ask your family, friends, and community groups to help our school by donating their old directories, too.

P1/2/3 Art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy

Our P1/2/3 class and their class teacher Miss Bell, recently took part in an active outdoor art lesson in the style of Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor, photographer, and environmentalist who lives in Scotland. He produces sculpture and land art in natural and urban settings and it involves the use of natural and found objects. He creates both temporary and permanent sculptures which draw out the character of their environment.

 

The P1/2/3 pupils went on a treasure hunt around the school grounds and garden to find as many objects as they could. These included wood, leaves, twigs, stones, rope, branches etc along with the odd piece of material and litter that had blown in!

 

They created some art work in the school grounds and then went out to the local park and surrounding areas to create other pieces of art and sculpture. They then invited the pupils and staff from the P4/5/6/7 class to go out and search for and look at their work.

 

When everybody returned to school, the work was then left for the villagers of Innerwick to come across and admire!

Torness Engineering Challenge

Children from our P4/7 class were amongst a group of 5 local schools who recently took part in an Engineering Challenge that was organised by Torness Power Station.

The children had to design a Safety Poster and also build a Wind Turbine complete with a motor that had to withstand wind from a fan! All of the children had great fun taking part in the activities, which culminated in a competition which took place at Hallhill Centre.

A group of 6 children went along to the competition and had to make a presentation on their Safety Posters and also show the working models of their Wind Turbines.

We are pleased to announce that Innerwick Primary School won the Poster Competition and were presented with a cheque for £300 and their own robot to take back to school which ALL of the children from the school could play with! Well done to all of those children who took part!

P7 Camp Experience – October 2008

You may have seen previously on our blog, that our P7 pupils went to Dounans Residential Centre at the beginning of October.

Whilst there, the children and Miss Lynn took part in a number of fun team activities which included abseilling, hill walking, orienteering and problem solving.

We are sure that you can tell from the photos that they all had a fabulous, albeit a bit wet, time whilst they were there!

They also thought that it was a great way to make new friends as part of their transition to S1 in August 2009.

School Garden

The school recently received a donation for taking part in an Engineering Challenge and it was agreed that some of this would be used to purchase some small trees and shrubs for planting in the vast school garden.

One tree was purchased for each child and they all spent a cold, wintry Friday morning having fun digging holes in the muddy garden and planting their plants!

The garden is starting to look fantastic now and we are all looking forward to the trees and shrubs blossoming and flowering in the months and years to come.

P1-P7 Diary Dates for December

 December will be a busy month for the children and we thought that you might like to know what we have planned.

 Here is a list of dates for your diary; –

 9th December 2008 – Gladys Chucklebutty is coming into school to do a performance for all of the children throughout the school. This will take place from 10.30am – 11.30am

 10th December 2008 – The children will be performing their Christmas Concert – A Christmas Presence – for the Community at 1.30pm 

11th December 2008 – The children will have a dress Rehearsal Performance of the School Christmas Concert – A Christmas Presence at 10.00am 

The evening performance of A Christmas Presence will take place from 7.00pm onwards.  

Immediately after the performance we will be holding our Christmas Fayre where you will be able to purchase a variety of crafts that have been made by the pupils from P1-P7. There will also be a raffle and home baking.  

Please could raffle donations for the Fayre be handed into school by Friday 5th December. Any donations of home baking for the cake stall should be handed in on Wednesday 10th December to allow for pricing of goods etc

 15th December 2008 – The P1/2/3 Christmas Party will take place in the afternoon.

 16th December 2008 – The P4/5/6/7 Christmas Party will take place in the afternoon.

 19th December 2008 – The whole school, including the Nursery Class will go along to the Christmas Service at the church. This will be held at 11.00am.

We hope that you have a great Christmas and look forward to seeing you on Monday 5th January 2009 when both the School and Nursery resume.

16th December 2008 – We will be holding a Nursery Coffee Morning and Art Exhibition, where you will have the opportunity to purchase pieces of artwork and crafts that your child has made. Any money raised will be used towards the purchase of a climbing frame for the Nursery Garden. Please come along and support your budding Picassos.

 18th December 2008 – The Nursery pupils will have their Christmas Party. Children should wear their party outfits.  

19th December 2008 – The whole school, including the Nursery Class will go along to the Christmas Service at the church. This will be held at 11.00am.
