Science Sleuths

Primary 7 have been investigating how healthy drinks are and particulalry how much sugar they contain. Miss Nicolson came over from the High school again this week and brought all the necessary equipment with her.

The pupils worked in groups testing milk, water, diet coke, normal coke and smoothie. Read on to find out what they did and what they found out……..

  1. I really enjoyed the science experement because it was a messy one!
You had to pour 80ml of either smoothie, diet coke, normal coke, milk or water into your bottle and add 5g of yeast to it. After everyone had done that we were told to swirl it round then we put a baloon on the top of our bottles.
The next day when we came back into school some of the baloons had blown up! The one that had blown up the most had the most sugar in the drink.

  2. I think the science experiment was really good because we measured the volume of coke, diet coke, smoothie, milk, and water.
We put 80ml of liquid into the bottle using a measuring cylinder and put 5g of yeast in with it.The balloon went over the top and some balloons started to blow up.

  3. As part of our science sleuths learning we were testing how much sugar there was in 5 common drinks- Diet Coke, Coke, smoothie, water and milk. To do this we put 5 grams of yeast into 80ml of our chosen drink. We then had to hastly put a balloon over the top and the bigger the balloon at the end of the week won!

  4. On Monday Miss Nicholson came over from the High School to do a science experiment with us.We had to find out what type of drink had more sugar in it.To do this we put 5g of yeast in to 80ml of pepsi, diet pepsi, milk, water and smoothie then we put a balloon on top of the drink and watched them inflate but we are still waiting for them to finish.

  5. I liked the science experiments, we had to find out how much sugar
was in diet coke, smoothie, cola, water and milk. My group was milk. What you had to do was get 80mililters of milk and 5gm of yeast
and an empty bottle, we put it in to the bottle and we put a balloon on to the top and let it fill up. My group was me, Julia, Ellen and Robert.
I don’t know who will win but I hope it is me.!!!

  6. This Monday Miss Nicholson came over from the High School to do another science experment. The experiment was to find out which drink had the most sugar in it.We were all put into groups our group tested the water in my group there was Georgie,me,Andrew and James. We had to measure 80ML and 5KG of yeast into an empty bottle. Then we put a balloon on the bottle.Surprisingly all 4 of the water balloons have inflated, however some are very inflated. We still do not know who has won!!

  7. Mrs Nicholson came over from the high school to show us an experiment. The experiment was to find out how much sugar was in some drinks. My drink was milk. The people that were in my group were Me, Ellen, Chris and robert. What we had to do was get an empty bottle and put 80mililiters of whatever drink we had into it, then 5.0kg of yeast into it, then put a balloon over the top of it and then shake it. My balloon was white and so far all the balloons inflated at some point but we are not quite sure who has won?!!!!!!!!

  8. This week Miss Nicholson came over from the high school to do a science experiment with us.We did the experiment to see which drink had the most sugar in it.To do the experiment we poured 80ml of our drink into an empty bottle along with 5g of yeast. Then we shook it all up and put a balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
The more the balloon inflated , the more sugar it had in it.The drink I used was smoothie so it inflated quite a bit.I really enjoyed doing the experiment and I can’t wait to do science in high school.

  9. Hi Guys,

I’ve been reading your blog and it’s brilliant. I’m really pleased to see no-one has used the word ‘amount’ but you’ve used volume and weight instead.

Looking forward to seeing you on the first year open days!

  10. Mrs NIcholson came over from the High School to do an experiment to show us how much sugar was in some drinks.

In my Group we tested diet coke and the conclusion was that 1 balloon inflated, 3 were half infalted and 1 had no gas.

Smoothies had the most sugar in it. Although we found out that smoothies contained natural sugar (fructose). I don’t like smoothies anyway so it doesn’t make much difference to me! Smoothies also contain a lot of fibre which is good for you.

We also did an acid check to see what drinks could clean the coin the best, the one with the most sugar cleaned the coin. Can you guess which one?

    Smoothie was the winner…….

  11. My group used diet coke. One bottle inflated, three are a little inflated and one has no gas.
We learned about what drinks had the most sugar and the smoothie had the most but it is full of lots of natural sugars. So we should all drink smoothie has lots of fructose and thats the natural sugar I was talking about before!
It was a really fun experiment!!

  12. My group were testing water. Two of the balloons wore inflated one was half inflated and another had no air.

smoothie had the most sugar out of all of the drinks which were real pepsi, diet coke, milk, smoothie, and water.

smoothie is still really healthy and it has natural sugars in it.

  13. Mrs Nicolson came to our class to do an experement on seeing how much sugar was in the drinks by putting the drink into the plastic bottle (e.g. a old coke bottle) and also yeast (so it will make gas to fill the balloon up). after we put a balloon on and shaked it up so the yeast would not stay at the bottom and do nothing!!!! then we went and put the bottles into the class and leave them for two days!!!

two days later we all checked the bottles and smothies were the winners because they had the most sugar in them, but the sugar was only natural (fructose) sugar so smoothie is not actually bad for you!!!

also on our last experement the acid in the smoothie also made the coin the cleanest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. I really enjoyed the science because it was really interesting and i learned lots of new stuff.

  15. Mrs. Nicolson came from the High School to do an experiment with us. She came over to teach us how much sugar is in different drinks. There were 5 different types of drinks – coke, diet coke, milk, water and smoothie. My table were using smoothie. The way the experiment worked was we all brought in a bottle and we weighed 5 grams of yeast to put it into. Then we measured 50 ml of our drink (smoothie) and added that to our bottle. After that we placed the volume of drink into our bottles and put a balloon over the top of it to over lap the top of our bottles. Lastly we shook it for a few minutes and left them until 3 days. The way to see what drink had the most sugar in it is the balloon would inflate.

The smoothie made all four balloons of my groups balloons inflate and vertical. Even though smoothies have lots of sugar (fructose) I am still going to have them because they have lots of vitamins and fibre. The smoothie cleaned the coin aswell!

  16. Our aim for the experiment to be successful was each group had a liquid e.g Milk, they poured 50ml in to a bottle and put in 5g of yeast in the bottle as well. Then we put a balloon over the bottle and the balloon would fill with gas (depending on how much sugar was in the drink). And the one with the most gas in the balloon would be the drink with the most sugar in it!

Out of the 5 different drinks (real pepsi, diet coke, smoothie, milk and water) my group tested real pepsi. 1 balloon inflated, 3 balloons half inflated and one didn’t have any gas at all.

Out of all the drinks the smoothie had the most sugar. This is because fruit smoothies are full of natrual sugars called fructoses.

In our last experiment the smoothie had the most acid in it as well but this is good acid. To do the experiment we put a dirty coin in a liquid (we tested the same liquids again) and left it for a couple of days and some coins came out clean and some didn’t.

But don’t worry smooties are still really good for you!!
Sorry this is such a long post I couldn’t shorten any of it!!!

  17. My group were testing milk. Basicly we had a bottle and we put milk and yeast in the bottle and a balloon over the bottle, we were trying to test how much sugur were in different drinks.

I will still have smoothies because they are lovely and they have lots of fibre and natrual sugur.:L:L:L

  18. Quite a while ago we done this other experiment where we were testing how much acid was in drinks. What we done was we had cups, and we had a coin that we put in are cups, and then we got are drink ( I used water)
Are coins where dirty before so we where trying to see which drink will clean it the most. We left our drinks for a couple of days and we looked at are coins, the milk made them go mouldy, water didn t do anything, coke sort of cleaned it and the smoothie cleaned it lots.
It turned out that the smoothie cleaned the coin lots so it had the most acid. 🙂

  19. On monday we done an experiment of how much sugar is in drinks.
My group used milk to test. Firstly we got are bottles, then we weighed the amount of yeast on scales, then we put the yeast in the bottle, then we added milk to the yeast and then we put a balloon over the top of the bottle.
We left are bottles for about a day and we finally checked. One of are ballonns were inflated and the other one was half inflated.
In the end it turned out that the smoothie had the most sugar but I will still have smoothies because they contain fruit sugars ( fruictoes) and that sugar is healthy.

  20. On Monday the 29/4/08 7D did a experiment on how much acid was in drinks, by ading yeast to it and put a balloon on top. The gas would rise into the balloon my group had real Pepsi. My baloon went the biggest In our class but the rest of my group’s baloons were small so we did’nt win, the smoothie did but sill drink smothies it was the Natural sugar called Frucose which was what made the balloon rise. I really enjoyed the experiment because it was extreamly fun.

    Bye 🙂

  21. On Monday Miss Nicholson came over from the high school to do science with 7D. We were testing for sugar in different drinks. We were split into groups of 4 or 5 and each group had a different drink.

My group used milk and one balloon inflated and one half inflated.

To do the experiment we put 5 grams of yeast into a juice bottle then poured 50ml of liquid then put an uninflated balloon over the top then left it for a couple of days

Smoothie’s had the most sugar but they are full of fibre and vitimins and are still healthy because the sugar in it is good sugar or fruit sugars (fructose). The more sugar thats in it the bigger the balloon will blow up

Smoothie also has the most acid from when we did our last experiment but again it is good acid. To do this experiment we put a coin in a certain amount of liquid and left it for a couple of days then we checked to see which liquid cleaned the coins the most.

  22. With Mrs Nicolson from the High School we did an experiment to see which drinks have the most sugar. What we did was we put 50ml of a certain soft drink into a plastic bottle. Then we measured out 5g of yeast and put that in the bottle. Finally we attached the neck of a balloon to the rim of the bottle and gave it a good shake. It took a while for anything to happen but after a while the yeast ate any sugar in the drink and turned it into gas. The more the balloon inflated the more sugar there was in the drink.

My group used Smoothie for the experiment and all 4 balloons inflated vertically. Even though this means Smoothie is full of sugar it doesn’t mean it is unhealthy because it is good, healthy, fruit sugar called Fructose and smoothies are full of fibre. When we did a seperate experiment for acid the smoothie had the most as well.

  23. Hi it’s Gary

My group used water and two ballons inflated, one of them a wee bit inflated and the other one had no air.

Conclusion- The smoothie had the most sugar in it but they are still good for you because it’s natural sugar (gluctose) it also has lots of vitimans and fibre.

When we did the acid test with the pennies to see how clean it would get the smoothie cleaned them the most so that means that it has the most acid but it’s good acid!!!

  24. Hi I am Imogen.

My group used real coke and the ending result was that one of the balloons inflated, three balloons are a little inflated and one balloon had no gas in it at all.

The conclusion was that smoothies have the most sugar in them but it is fruit sugars (fructose). They also have lots of vitimins and fibre in them aswell so they are not unhealthy they include about four of your five a day in them!

Last time when miss Nicolson came in we cleaned coins with the liquid we used this time and the smoothie again cleaned it the most!

    Imogen. x

    Last time when Miss

  25. With Mrs Nicholson we were trying to find out which drink out of coke, diet coke, smoothie, water and milk had the most sugar. After the experiment was complete we found out that smothie has the most sugar (natural sugars – so don’t stop drinking them because they are very good for you).

We did another experiment to find out which drink had the most acid out of smoothie, coke, diet coke, milk, water. We got a dirty copper coin and put it in the drink and left it for a few days. In the end smoothie won again (but still drink them).

Can’t wait to do more science. (H)

  26. Hi I am Eilidh !!

My group used real pepsi and our result was that one balloon inflated , three balloons are a little inflated and one has no gas in it at all !!

Conclusion ~ Smoothies have the most sugar in them but it is all natural sugars ( fructose ) they also have lots of vitamins and fibre !!

When we tested for the amount of acid the smoothie cleaned the coin the most which means it has the most acid in it !!
