Burns’ Competition

Well done to all of the children who participated in our annual Burns’ competition on Wednesday. We are all so impressed with the high standard!
Today three children from each class were chosen to perform for the school at assembly. They received a certificate and a huge round of applause from everyone!
What a fantastic achievement!

Torness Power Station

Yesterday P5-P7 children went to visit Torness Power Station. It was a fascinating visit and all of the children were confident in speaking about their learning experiences.
There were many different activities planned for the children. These included a tour of the power station, a quiz, interactive activities run by the police and firemen.
During the tour, the children visited many parts of the station including a viewing area of the reactors. They also got to watch the controllers doing their jobs.
The trip was inspirational in terms of thinking about our learning and how we can apply it to our everyday lives. Also the staff members at Torness really focussed on how we use our skills in our working lives. Many of the children are now thinking of their career preferences!
Thank you to Torness Power Station and to our many parent helpers for their support.

Accelerated Reading

We are still immensely proud of our recent award here at Loretto! We aim to continue our excellent practice in Accelerated Reading by continuing to encourage the children to reach their reading targets and develop a lifelong love of reading!

The children’s reading targets (points) are due to be completed by 22nd December- the last day of term. There is still a month to achieve those points so keep up the good work!

If you are unsure of the level of a book or the number of points that it is worth, the website http://www.arbookfind.co.uk/ will be able to help you to find out.

Parents and carers can be informed when a child takes a quiz and how well they got on. Please contact Miss O’ Regan if you are not set up for Home Connect and she will organise this for you.

Outdoor Number Buddy Activity

Yesterday the P7 children and the P1 children came together to do some number bond activities. As well as being their buddies, the P7 children are also “number buddies” to P1. They support them with their number work and this term, they are supporting them especially with their number bonds to 10.
The children were given a number between 1 and 5 and then had to make groups of varying totals. The P7 children helped by either making up a group with the children or by encouraging them to get into their own groups. The P1 children really enjoyed writing down the formal calculation using chalk!
Well done to P7 and P1!

Learning to Play the Guitar

Well done to our P7 super star musician who has recently started guitar lessons. He has made a great start to his musical career. Today he taught some P7 children how to play different notes and how to hold the guitar. We were all very impressed at his commitment and his progress so far.

If you would like more information about learning how to play the guitar, why not speak to us in P7. We can tell you all about where to find  lessons and the amount of practice.img_1218

Welcome Back from P7!

What a great start to the year P7 have had! We have been learning lots about many different things, we can hardly believe that we have managed to squeeze in so much learning and so many activities in such a short space of time!

In our Maths, we have been learning about pie charts and also practising our timestables. Some of us can even say our 800 timestables forwards and backwards! Why don’ t you ask us to say them for you?

We have been carrying out a lot of research about famous people. In pairs, we selected a famous person and created factfiles about them. We then wrote a letter to the famous person and this week we wrote a biography about their lives. We also been learning about other famous people including Mary Anning, Nelson Mandela, Andy Murray and Theresa May!

We are very much looking forward to starting our new interdisciplinary learning using Myths as a context.

Our trips out of school included a trip to the Book Festival and a trip to the lagoons to do some watersports. Learning outside really is engaging and helps us to practise our skills.

Watch out for us on Twitter!

Mandarin Challenge Event

IMG_0443 IMG_0442 IMG_0441 IMG_0438 IMG_0437 IMG_0436

This afternoon P3 children hosted a celebration of Mandarin language learning and Chinese cultural learning in the gym hall. It was a fantastic way to showcase all of the work that the children have carried out over the course of the year and a wonderful way to show our appreciation of all the hard work Mengyao, Miss Kinsella and Mrs Hill have done.
The hall was set into stations and the P3 children were in charge of an activity. Children from various classes attended for a short session and moved around the bases. This helped P3 children to become leaders of learning. Well done!
Thank you to all of the staff involved in this truly fantastic activity!

Today Charlotte, our French assistant, said goodbye! Charlotte worked with many of the children across the school to support their French learning.  We have learnt so much from her and will miss her! We wish her well for her return to Paris and hope that she will keep in touch.

Merci beaucoup!

Today was an extra special day at our school with many visitors coming to meet us! P4-P7 attended an author event in the gym hall before break and Pinkie and Burgh children arrived to meet him afterwards.
Barry Hutchison is a very funny author who has written over 70 books! His new book, Beaky Malone, sounds absolutely wonderful! Barry read us an extract. We all want to find out what happens next.
We are all enjoying our Reading is Braw project and events like this really keep us interested.
Thank you to everyone who helped to organise today.
