Snow Day Tasks

Hi there!

I hope everyone is loving the snow but keeping cosy and staying safe too! P7s, you may wish to have a go at some of the optional tasks below! I have added some snow day tasks to Google Classroom and have emailed them to you too if you’d like to log on to your edubuzz accounts and get busy. Don’t forget about your spelling booklets and homework grids. Also READ READ AND READ SOME MORE for World Book Day.

If you are unable to log on and would like to have a go then here are some of the tasks and ideas:

Snow Day Task 1

Can you create a snow-themed spelling activity? Remember that you are have to build up your 25 spelling points and creating a task of your own is worth 10 points! Could you tweet @Loretto_RC with instructions for your task and encourage other children to give it a go?

Snow Day Task 2

Can you name countries in other parts of the world where it snows? We don’t get snow like this very often at all but other countries have snow for much of the year! Can you create a poster or a fact file all about snowy countries?

• Clear title and at least 3 subheadings
• Places where it snows – country, continent, hemisphere
• Type of climate in the country
• Do children go to school there when it snows?
• What types of animals live there and how do they survive in the cold?
• Some interesting facts about the places!

Snow Day Task 3

Thinking about liquids, solids and gases!
Do some scientific experiments!
• Could you fill up an ice cube tray and time how long it takes to freeze in your freezer versus how long it takes to freeze outside? Check the temperature of the freezer and of the outdoors first and make a prediction about which will be faster!
• Create your own ice feature! Pop some small objects into a tray and cover them with water. Leave the tray out overnight and see if it freezes. How will you release the objects from the ice? Will you melt it in a warm environment? Will you use something to speed up the melting?
• Create an experiment of your own!
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PERMISSION FROM YOUR GROWN-UPS FOR THESE!

Snow Day Task 4

Are you feeling chilly? Log on to Education City and play Arcade Champion. We are working hard on our strategies for ordering numbers in the millions!

Snow Day Task 5

Get imaginative!
Write a Winter Adventure! This could be a story, poem or a play. Use all of the descriptive techniques we have been learning about!
• Imagery
• Adjectives
• Similes
• Metaphor

Hoping to see you all soon!

Remember to tweet us!

Mrs Kinsella 🙂

P1 and P1/2 Trip to National Gallery

P1 and P1/2 had a fantastic day at the National Galleries of Scotland today. They learned so much about landscape paintings. They looked at paintings of seascapes, gardens and lakes. The paintings were from Scotland, France and Italy. The children had a go at recreating the techniques used by the famous artists and went outside to do some sketching of the landscape around Princes St. Gardens. We had a wonderful day and learned so much!

Reading is Braw Storysack Library Visits

Here are some pictures from the last two trips to Musselburgh Library as part of P1 and P2’s storysack event. Thank you to the fabulous staff at school and at Musselburgh Library for making this possible and to our wonderful Grandparent helper, Kathleen, for supporting this project throughout its duration.

P1/2 Superstar Assembly!

P1/2 celebrated their achievements and the achievements of children in the other classes today when they put on a Superstar Assembly. They did fantastically well and we are very proud of them all. Believe and Achieve!

Reading Is Braw Storyteller Visit to P1 and P1/2

P1 and P1/2 were lucky to have a visit from a storyteller called Fraser this morning. He told us some scary stories, funny stories and silly stories. We squealed and laughed and smiled! The children were captivated throughout the session. Fraser told us about a letter he had received from Roald Dahl many years ago. Roald Dahl asked him to tell children that reading makes us so much better at our learning in so many ways. The children who have kept up with their Reading Is Braw challenge and have kept their diaries up to date will be receiving their wristbands today! We are at the end of week 10 – only 5 weeks to the party! Keep on reading!

Reading Is Braw Trip – 17th May 2016

Here are some pictures of the children from P1 and P2 who went to Musselburgh Library today. Enjoy your storysacks!

Chinese Calligraphy in P3!

Today, in Mandarin, P3 have been learning about Chinese calligraphy. The children used special brushes, paper and “magic” water to practise writing the Chinese characters which represent numbers 1-10. Well done everyone!

Another Reading is Braw visit to Musselburgh Library!

Some more P1 and P1/2 children enjoyed a visit to Musselburgh Library this morning as part of Reading is Braw. Have a lovely time with your story sacks boys and girls!

Easter Nests in P1 and P1/2

P1 and P1/2 made Easter nests today with shredded wheat, chocolate and mini eggs. They look delicious. The children can’t wait to try them once they have set!

P1/2 (and some of P2/3) create Scottish art and poetry

On Friday, we were very lucky to be joined by some of the P2/3 children who helped us with our learning all about Scotland. We used Scots language to create a list poem which we arranged in the shape of a thistle – a bit like a wordle – and then made beautiful thistles to go on the wall beside it.
Our poem goes like this…

a fleein’ Saltire
a laddie in a kilt
a braw bahookie
an awfy sair heid
a wee tartan moose
a bleedin’ neb
a flee in yer tatties
a greetin’ bairn
a toaty wee craw
a sleekit moose
a bonnie lassie
a gigantic wa’
a dug eating haggis
Mammy making shortbread
a moose in a hoose
shoogle yer shooders
a bonnie thistle

We hope you enjoyed it. Here are some pictures of us working hard!
