What languages do we offer?
At Musselburgh Grammar School, the Modern Languages faculty offers four language qualifications:
- French (S1 to S6)
- Spanish (S1 to S6
- German (S3 to S6)
- Italian (S5 & S6)
- ESOL (S4 to S6)
Studying a modern language is a compulsory part of the Broad General Education (BGE) curriculum, which is taught to all pupils in the junior phase (S1, S2 & S3). For pupils in the senior phase (S4, S5 & S6), study of a modern language is elective.
What qualifications do we offer?
Currently, we offer qualifications at the following levels:
French: National 3, National 4, National 5, Higher and Adv. Higher.
Spanish: National 3, National 4, National 5, Higher and Adv. Higher.
German: National 3, National 4, National 5, Higher and Adv. Higher.
Italian: National 3, National 4, National 5 and Higher.
ESOL: National 5 and Higher.
When do we offer our language courses?
We offer our courses at various points across the junior and senior phases. Currently, we offer languages in the following years:
S1: 3 periods of Modern Languages (2 of French; 1 of Spanish)
S2: 3 periods of Modern Languages (2 of French; 1 of Spanish)
S3: 3 periods of any Modern Language chosen (French, Spanish and/or German)
S4: 4 periods of any Modern Language chosen (French, Spanish and/or German). ESOL offered at the discretion of the Principal Teacher.
S5: 6 periods of any Modern Language chosen (French, Spanish, Italian and/or German). ESOL offered at the discretion of the Principal Teacher.
S6: 6 Periods of any Modern Language chosen at Higher or National Qualification level (French, Spanish, Italian and/or German). Number of periods taught per week vary for Advanced Higher Modern Languages dependent on class size.
