National 6/ New Higher The New Higher course consists of three different sections of work which are Expressive, Design and Art & Design studies.
Information for Higher candidates
Candidates will be assessed in the three areas listed above- The Expressive Portfolio, the Design Portfolio and The Art & Design Studies Exam.
This portfolio is worth 160 marks out of a total of 220 marks. This is approximately 73% of the overall marks for the Course assessment. The Course will be graded A–D.
It assesses the following skills, knowledge and understanding:
the ability to identify the creative development potential in your work
the ability to confidently use selected art and design materials, techniques and/or technology expressively and creatively when responding to an expressive theme/stimuli and design brief
the ability to produce and critically reflect on your final piece of expressive art and the final design solution
the ability to present your work for assessment
The Art and Design portfolio has two Sections.
Section 1, titled ‘Expressive’, will have 80 marks.
Section 2, titled ‘Design’, will have 80 marks.
In this assessment, you will have to:
review your previous work and identify one strong expressive development idea and one strong design development idea
present a selection of work showing the further development and refinement of the original expressive and design idea/inspiration
use this work to produce a final piece of expressive art work and a final design solution, showing your ability to develop, refine and realise your ideas and maintain visual continuity with your original development work
evaluate your final piece of expressive art work and your final design solution, expressing justified opinions on the effectiveness of your finished work with reference to your creative intentions and expressive theme/stimuli/design brief
present your work for external assessment

Outcome 2 Produce creative design ideas and development work for a design brief by:
2.1 Identifying the design opportunities, issues and constraints in the brief 2.2 Producing a variety of in-depth investigative and market research in response to the design brief 2.3 Using a variety of materials, techniques and/or technology experimentally for creative effect 2.4 Developing and progressively refining a variety of design ideas, taking account of the design area requirements and opportunities 2.5 Using complex design-based problem solving and evaluation skills when planning and refining their design ideas
