3-D Design Brief

Your Design outcome can be either

  • an Architectural Design
  • a Textile Design
  • a Jewellery Design
  • a  Product Design
  • The Theme of your design could be based on either the Natural Environment-Birds
  • Scottish Wildlife
  • Fungi
  • Seedpods
  • Flowers/Plants
  • Seashore
  • Biological structures
  • or
  • the Man Made World
  • Mechanical objects
  • Science
  • Ancient Civilisations
  • Industry
  • Robotics

 

In your sketchbook

  • Produce three high quality sketches related to your theme
  • Collect photographs, postcards, bits out of magazines etc related to the Theme and Market Research
  • From the three initial sketches choose sections to look at in more detail
  • (zoom into different aspects of the drawing) focus on the different visual elements – line, texture, pattern, shape, form and colour and create thumbnail sketches in sketchbook of these studies

Textile/Hat Design

  • produce a variety of positive/negative (conterchange) drawings
  •  look at shape/colour/pattern/ textural studies using a variety of media
  • eg needlefelting, machine or hand applique, screenprint, lasercutter, block print, Angelina fibres, photo transfer paper to produce creative samples for ideas.
  • Produce 4 or 5 creative initial concept ideas for your Design.
  • Develop two of your strongest ideas in more detail and depth making sure you adhere to the design brief.

 

Architectural Design

  • Produce 4 or 5 creative initial concept ideas for your Design
  • Looking in particular  at shape, form, texture, pattern and colour
  • use sketch up on computer to further develop these initial  ideas
  • collect materials which you could possibly use to create your model building
  • ( wood, metal, fablon, laminated inks, material for lasercutting pattern or shapes, foamboard, wire, cardboard
  • take photos or print off plan map area on google maps of where design is to be situated
  • Develop two of your strongest ideas in more detail and depth making sure you adhere to the design brief.
  •  Produce a plan drawing  1:50
  • Also show interior images showing the intended atmosphere of your design
  • Make small sample models of your Architectural ideas in 3-D.

 

  • Product Design – Lighting (lasercut) /Sandblasted Glassware
  • Take your initial drawings and start to stylise the imagery by either simplifying, manipulating or focusing in on particular areas.
  • produce a variety of positive/negative (conterchange) drawings taken from the shapes and patterns found in your initial studies
  • source a piece of glass/ balsa wood which you could use for your final design
  • Produce 5 or 6 creative initial concept ideas for the pattern which will be sandblasted onto your glass or perhaps lasercut into wood.
  • Looking in particular at line, shape, pattern and texture
  • Develop two of your strongest ideas in more detail and depth making sure you adhere to the design brief.
  • Show using a  line drawing and a tonal counterchange drawing how the two strongest designs will work on the 3-D glass piece.then

For your Final Design Outcome/ Added Value Unit

  • Produce at two x A2 sheets or 1 x A1 sheet to show further development (fabric samples, photos of 3-D models, drawings) and problem solving of your Final solution ( this is sent to SQA)
  • Create your Final 3-D outcome (which will be photographed for sending to SQA)
  • Write an evaluation on your Design work.
