In S4 we offer National 3, National 4 and National 5 courses. These provide the opportunity to further develop:

- Listening/Understanding Music Skills

A varied selection of pieces will be played on two instruments (this may include voice), minimum Grade 1 standard.
Learners will keep a log of self-reflection, noting areas for further development. A folio of compositional exercises is produced, showing an understanding of simple compositional techniques Learners will identify and describe specified music concepts in excerpts of music and be able to demonstrate the ability to read simple music notation. There is no added value for this course. This entire course is internally assessed.

The Added Value Unit will be a Music Performance of 2 programmes of contrasting music on 2 instruments (including voice) lasting a total of 8 minutes. This entire course is internally assessed.

Learners will perform to a Visiting Examiner, playing 2 programmes of contrasting music on 2 instruments (may include voice) lasting a total of 8 minutes, minimum Grade 3 standard (60% of total mark). Learners will keep a log of self-reflection. In composition, learners will understand key features of different creative compositional approaches, creating their own music using specified music concepts. Learners will identify and describe the use of specified music concepts in excerpts of music. They will investigate social and cultural influences on music styles. Learners will have an understanding of musical literacy/notation at this level. There will be an externally assessed Listening exam (40% of total mark).
