NBHS 12 Hour Music Marathon
On Saturday 17 November 2018, the school is holding a 12 hour Music Marathon to raise funds for a cause very dear to our hearts – The Jess Mackie Memorial Fund.
Jess, who sadly passed away in January, was passionate about music, particularly singing and she also knew the benefits that music could bring to others.
All funds raised in her name will be allocated specifically to provide music therapy at Edinburgh Children’s Hospital.
Currently there is an ongoing initiative with Tinderbox Orchestra, a collective of musicians providing music therapy for children attending or admitted to The Sick Kids hospital. Music can have an enormous impact, helping ignite a spark in the children and giving them back a sense of control. It also gives them a means to express themselves, make friends, build confidence and access new opportunities.
In addition, the fund is supporting a new project which hopes to prove a beneficial link between the benefits of singing to children and young people suffering from asthma. The hospital have started a pilot project called “SWAG” Singing with Asthma Group, and the costs around that are being funded by Jess’s Fund.
Beginning at at 9am, the performers will provide non-stop music every half an hour throughout the day, culminating in a grand community sing-a-long for the final hour. We will also be serving teas, coffees, homebaking and light lunches between 12pm and 2pm.
The 12 hour music marathon will take place at St Andrew Blackadder Church, High Street, North Berwick and we welcome all students, parents, friends and visitors to join us.
We hope it is a fitting event to celebrate a talented, kind and inspirational young woman.
If any parents feel they would like to help us on the day, please contact Mrs Gill Casson who is coordinating the event.
