On the 4th of March Chelsea’s manager had just been sacked after just 10 months at the club. After they were defeated 1-0 by West Bromwich Albion he had to go. This sudden change left Roberto Di Matteo in charge.
Straight away he had a chance to prove himself and he certainly delivered. Chelsea were 3-1 down to Napoli in the champion’s league. After a header from Drogba at 29 minutes that put them 1-0 up at half time. Then a great corner from Frank Lampard and a smashing header from the captain John Terry at 48 minutes put them 2-0 up.
Napoli didn’t stop and scored a screamer volley from Inler that put them 4-3 up on aggregate, but in the 74th minute Lampard smashed a penalty home to take the match to extra time. Ivanovic’s thumping finish proved to be the decisive moment. Chelsea won 4-1 (agg 5-4) and they are through to the next round. Chelsea’s captain John Terry said after the match, “We proved we’re a team. That desire, that togetherness. We showed what Chelsea are made of.”

Italy’s prop Martin Castrogiovanni received a fractured rib after their 19-15 defeat to England. However, he has now made a quicker recovery than expected. The 30 year-old Italian rugby player returned to training for their match against Wales and has now been named as one of six changes by Jacques Brunel for the crucial clash against Scotland. On Saturday the 17th of March the loser will receive the Wooden Spoon.
