No it’s not a new Enid Blyton novel, but another exciting episode in the lives of P5. This week the brave souls from P5 (and a couple of stalwart mums) went gorge walking in the wild outdoors. Follow this link to see the photographic evidence!
P5 kicked off their Scottish History timeline project with a visit to both Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Nathan did a sterling job of pointing out the main places of interest around the castle and then we met a very important person – none other than Mary Queen of Scots herself! She drilled the class in the fine arts of noblemen and women. We then a quick march down the Royal Mile and had lunch at the Palace. Just in the education room though – our invitation to the Queens Dining Room hadn’t got through! After lunch we were guided through several of the state rooms and a peek at where David Rizzio was murdered. The class had a great time, behaved impeccably and learned loads. The only downside was the weather – it was freezing.
The other big event of the week was the Fairtrade cafe. P5 put in a lot of work behind the scenes creating gorgeous posters, researching lots of facts to put into their personal leaflets and helping P1/2 get an understanding of what Fairtrade is all about. And then finally they helped run the successful cafe. It was so successful in fact, Mr Cain forgot to take any photos in his struggle to keep up with the teas and coffees. Doh! The cafe made in excess of £140 so a big thanks to everyone who contributed the delicious home baking and to those who turned up on the day to eat, drink and have a chat. The class couldn’t have done it without your support.
Last Thursday, P5 went to the Glasgow Science Centre to consolidate their learning on the scientific principles they had been studying in class. As you can see from this post on the P5 class blog they learned lots more besides!!

This week has been jammed packed with John Muir stuff for us in P5. On Monday the dance lady came in and took us for a dance lesson based on John Muir. We had to choose cards with animals on them and then choose 3 words that described how they moved. After that we had to create a move for each word and join them together to make a small dance sequence. We then got into different pairs and chose 8 movement words from a big group and created a move for each one and joined them together to make a bigger sequence. And finally two pairs got together and showed each other their sequences to a make a huge dance sequence of 16 steps. It was fun putting the movements together and watching the groups perform. On Wednesday we had a class trip to the John Muir birthplace museum in Dunbar. The museum is in three floors and we were split into three groups to go round. The ground floor is all about John Muir as a boy in Scotland. The middle floor is all about John Muir’s work in America and the top floor is all about things that happened after he had died. We found out loads on interesting facts and jotted them down on our note sheets. We played the computer games and watched the DVD. We even got to try the belt – it was sore!! Once we had finished we got to tell each other some acts we had learned while sitting on John Muir’s loafer chair which played strange sounds to scare lazy people. Some of the sounds were funny. On Thursday, Shonagh the drama teacher came in and did a drama lesson on what John Muir was like as a boy. His dad was very fierce. She even got Mr Cain to play the part of the grumpy dad too. We pretended to take eggs from the chickens in the next door farm and got chased by the farmer. We also got to be the John Muir’s children when they found out they were going to America the next morning. We learned loads about what he was like as a boy.
P5 started their John Muir award work today with an introduction to the river behind the school. We had a chance to explore the banks, discuss the wildlife that might be found in and around the river before finally getting a chance to get in. Everyone had a great time catching some insect life and identifying what they found. The sheer amount and variation in what we discovered proved that the river is in a healthy condition.

Today primary 4 & primary 5 were lucky enough to attend the Primary Games at Meadowmill. Now a day out of school playing sports is usually a cause for celebration as it is, but this was extra special because we got to see the Queen’s Commonwealth Games baton on it’s tour around Scotland. In fact, some of us even got to touch it! Then we had the chance to play some sports with children from all over East Lothian. The sun was scorching and water and sun-tan lotion was in short supply. However, it was testament to the Pencaitland Primary School spirit that no-one flagged (except the teachers) and everyone competed fairly and behaved impeccably. It was clear the school have some up-and-coming sportsmen and sportswomen of the future!
To finish of their John Muir award, P5 ventured into the nettle infested woods behind the school to see which group could build the best den or shelter. The challenge was to build a den that could take each team member with additional points on offer for camouflage.
They learned a lot about teamwork, how to make a secure structure and some top tips on camouflage. P5 had a really fun time (apart from the nettles) and are now all ready should they ever be lost in a tropical jungle!
