Call for parents to participate in Pencaitland Community Council

Could you take part in Pencaitland's Community Council? There are currently a number of vacancies on the Pencaitland Community Council (PCC). Young people, the farming community and parents of pre-school or school-age children are currently under-represented and it would be great to see new members from these groups.

The PCC is the liaison between the community and East Lothian Council. We meet almost every month to discuss matters affecting the local community and to find ways of addressing or resolving these matters. The meetings are also an opportunity to chat to other community councillors and to meet our locally elected Councillors. We also have a website and produce a newsletter once a year.

If you think you would be interested, or you know someone who might be, please contact Janet Bassett on 340 540 or Nicky Neighbour at nicky_neighbour@yahoo.co.uk or on 340 115 to find out more.

Pencaitland… still under snow!

So school’s out again because of the snow. So you’ve no excuse for not grabbing the camera (ask your parents first though) and snapping some fresh shots of snowy Pencaitland in your garden, street or wherever you like.

Why not take some snowy pictures and share them on our Pencaitland Under Snow Flickr Group

Once you have a picture you would like to share, upload it to the Pencaitland Under Snow Flickr group and don’t forget to email a copy to the school too and it might get featured in a display.

Public Consultation on “The School Handbook”

As a parent you may be unaware that regulations require education authorities to provide certain information each year to parents/carers (usually known as “the school handbook”) about the school which their child attends. This information may be available in a range of formats and could be included as part of the school’s annual report.

It typically covers a range of information such as transport facilities, school meal provision, post-school destinations, additional support for learning, discipline and school rules, enforcement of attendance, specialist provision, attainment in National Qualifications and placing requests.

The changes currently taking place in 3-18 education in Scotland through Curriculum for Excellence suggest the current requirements for the school handbook need to be refreshed and updated to ensure it is more relevant and helpful for parents, and more consistent with the values, purposes and principles of Curriculum for Excellence.

The Scottish government is seeking your views on the future requirements for providing the right kinds of information for parents and carers about their child’s school, which opened in mid November and will end on 14 March 2011.

The consultation questionnaire can be accessed online should you wish to make your thoughts and views known.

Information on school openings for Monday 29 November

This update is taken for the East Lothian Council website. You can check for any updates here.

“Parents and carers are advised that headteachers will make the decision as to whether they believe their schools can open depending on the weather conditions in the area. This will be done as early as possible tomorrow morning, and each morning thereafter.

At this stage, all schools are set to open on Monday, 29 November as normal, though parents and children are asked to be careful given likely underfoot conditions.

Any school closure announcement will be added to this website and published through other local media, including Radio Forth, as soon as possible. Schools will also publish information on their own websites.”

Playground: Can you Help?

Pencaitland Primary PlaygroundHave you got any creative ideas about how we can make the playground more fun? If you do please email me. We want to form a group of parents who would be able to look after the playground and develop new ideas, working with the school staff, PTA and other interested parties.
