Letter to parents

Activities Week 2012 takes place during the last week of the summer term 25th-29th June. Pupils have been given a list of activities to choose from that they will participate in on the Monday to Thursday. On the Friday we will be holding a whole school event and barbque.

  • Pupils must return their activity choices form to their register teacher or school office by Wednesday 28th March. Please ensure the PC1 is also completed.
  • If pupils require more information about any of the activities on offer they should speak to the member of staff responsible for it.
  • Any other questions they should direct to Mr Lanyon.
  • House points will be allocated to the first three register classes in each year group to have a 100% return of forms.

USA Update

Today has been a long day!

Leaving Tempe behind us we headed for LA with a stop off  in Palm Springs for shopping. The weather has thrown everything it can at us during this trip and today was no exception. As we left Phoenix the sun was shining and there was a warmth in the air that did not last. Soon the clouds rolled in and the rain started to fall just as the shopping started. As we arrived in LA we were reliably informed that the last time it had rained was December. It would appear that we brought our own little piece of Scotland with us. Tonights hotel is the 4* Angeleno which sits in the shadow of the Getty Gallery and is just a stones throw from Universal Studios where we will be spending the day tomorrow. After an hour in the pool and a fantastic dinner on the 16th floor with a view of the city it is time to turn in and try and catch up on some sleep. We all get a lie in tomorrow, we don’t have to be up until 7am. Two more days until our road trip ends and the chance to sleep on the 11hr flight home.

USA Update

Valentines day started rather cold with a fresh layer of snow. Arizona is not the warmest at this time of year especially when your hotel is at 6000ft above sea level. The hotel though was truly amazing with a fabulous selection of food for dinner and a huge open fire to sit around and relax. After seeing the delights of the Grand Canyon the night before the prospect of it in the snow was even better and did not disappoint. Standing on the top of the south rim with snow falling and the spectacular Grand Canyon spread out before you is a truly amazing experience and makes you feel like such a small cog in the grander scheme of things. On the walk back to the coach the local wildlife made an appearance as two deer strolled across the path looking for a tasty meal. Leaving the visitor centre we made our way to Angel point where we enjoyed a different view and an amazing mug of hot chocolate. All too soon it was time to leave and we headed for our overnight stop in Tempe, Phoenix. The hotel is in the shadow of Arizona State University and as I type Mr Sellwood has donned his Hoff costume and is acting as pool lifeguard. Tomorrow we make our final big coach trip into Los Angeles with a stop off at Palm Springs for some retail therapy. Tonights internet connection os much quicker so hopefully we will get more photographs uploaded. Check out flickr.

USA Update

Today has been a day of extremes. As we left Nevada and Las Vegas the temperature was 80 degrees, as we arrived in Arizona it was snowing and baltic. Strappy tops, shorts and t-shirts were definitely not appropriate attire. However after a quick change the aweinspiring Grand Canyon beckoned. ‘Mr Lanyon was in the canyon’ or as it was soon changed to ‘Clanyon in the Canyon’. It is difficult to do the sight that was spread out before us justice, in either words or pictures. After a long days travel Team PL are now relaxing in the hotel next to to jacuzzi and about to get ready for dinner. Tomorrow we return to the South rim for a walk before heading to Tempe for our last stop over before the delights of Los Angeles and our last hotel the 4* Hotel Angeleno.

USA Update

Wow! What a day. After an overnight stop in Bakersfield we made an early start to our next destination of Las Vegas. On the way we passed through the magnificent landscape of Death Valley National Park and were truly amazed at the diverse landscape from salt plains to sand dunes, mountain passes at 4956ft to the base of the valley at 195 ft below sea level. With tales of rattlesnakes and scorpions put to one side we all enjoyed playing in the sand dunes and taking some amazing photos that due to a small technical hitch will not be uploaded today – sorry. As the sun started to set we arrived on the strip and had our first sight of the famous sites of Ceasars Palace, The Bellagio and The Venetian. After settling in to our hotel for the night the time to explore the strip arrived with free time to explore. Tomorrow we have our big day of travel as we head towards the Grand Canyon.

SW USA Tour

After what seemed an eternity we finally touched down in a warm San Francisco and transited immigration swiftly. As we changed our watches to Western Sea Board time we realised that we had been up for 24hrs. A quick stop at the hotel and then off to dinner at Bubba Gump’s on Pier 39. Friday saw us undertake a city tour and then we took the ferry to Alcatraz. Dinner at Hard Rock Cafe and then a trip around Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Tomorrow we head to Muir Woods home of the giant redwood and film set for Ewoks and Planet of the Apes before onward travel to Bakersfield. A tired team but a happy one.

USA bound pupils go bag packing!

The 5th of November is definitely a day to celebrate.

Mr Sellwood and Mr Lanyon were proud to be associated with those who turned out today for bag packing at ASDA, The Jewel. After 6 hours of very hard work the grand total raised was £1249. Our students were a credit to Preston Lodge High School receiving numerous positive comments from the happy shoppers of ASDA, The Jewel.

Many thanks to Kerrin McLeod who is an ex pupil of PLHS for allowing us to bag pack at ASDA to raise funds for our trip to the USA in February where we will be traveling 1500 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles via Death Valley, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.
