DadsWork is starting a playgroup for dads and children under 5 years old on Wednesday 20th February at Prestonpans Infant School Community Room at 1.00pm – 2.30pm, come along or contact Kevin Young on 01316650848 or 07833741768 for further information. Come along and enjoy art activities, singalongs, stories and fun play with your children, you will have an opportunity to chat with DadsWork staff and meet new dads. Entry will be through the main entrance at the school. This group will run term time on a Wednesday at 1.00pm – 2.30pm.

Employment Opportunity – The Open Championship July 2013

IMG has the honour of working on behalf of The R&A as their licensing agency. The R&A is golf’s world rules and development body and organiser of The Open Championship and the Claret Jug is without doubt the most famous trophy in the game of golf.

Jobs will involve the operation of tills, control of stock and a variety of general duties within the Merchandise Pavilion, with full training given prior to the event. 

You will be required to work from Sunday 14th Sunday July-21st July 2013 inclusive (with Sunday 14th being set aside as a paid staff training day). Unfortunately, applications will only be considered if you are available to work for all of the dates outlined and you must be aged 16 and above on 01/07/2013. 

The basic rate of pay is £6.20 per hour and is divided into a morning or an afternoon shift so everyone will have the opportunity to watch the golf at some stage.

Former Pupil will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro!

“Hey! I’m Rachel and I’m a former pupil of Preston Lodge High School. I am now in my first year of my medical science degree at Aberdeen university and, thanks to a society within the university, in June 2013 I shall be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro (the HIGHEST free standing mountain in the world at 5895m!) to raise money for a charity called “Child Reach International”.

Child Reach

International is international development charity that works in partnership with local communities within the developing world, since they first began in 2004. Currently they have six on-going projects in Tanzania, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Cambodia and Bangladesh. The charity is dedicated at providing children with better access to education, improved healthcare and greater protection and child rights within these areas.

Before climbing Kilimanjaro, I shall be visiting one of the projects within the Tanzanian Kilimanjaro region. The main focus in this project is improving education to help unlock every child’s potential for a better future. They do this by having several small ongoing projects, my favourite being the ‘Litre of Light’. In this project they aim to provide the whole village of Kwatito with light 24/7, allowing the children to finish their homework at night and not fall behind and have to drop out as a result.

In the last year alone, Child Reach International raised £3.9 million, which helped over 350,000 children! UCAS APPLICATIONS AND GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR S6

MONDAY 27 AUGUST – 7.30 PM – SCHOOL ASSEMBLY HALL

S6 students have received a letter giving details of the information evening next Monday.  If your daughter/son is considering applying to Higher Education it is essential you attend.  Students should also come along to the meeting. 

A representative from the University of Edinburgh will give an input to the presentation, after which there will be time for questions and refreshments.

Please return the tear-off slip by Friday 24 August if you are able to attend.

Scottish Media Academy Summer School

The Scottish Media Academy’s summer school is now taking bookings for July and August. The five day course covers radio, television, online and print, including journalism, production and presenting techniques. It is designed and delivered by qualified university academics and media professionals. Courses run from radio stations including Forth One in Edinburgh and Clyde 1 in Glasgow.

The summer school is specifically designed for students in 4th, 5th and 6th year with a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism or the media.  The minimum age is 15 and we will guarantee the early bird discount to your students. (They should quote TALENT when booking). FRANCE (Dordogne) TRIP UPDATE

Several people have asked us to clarify a few points:

Clothing:

All specialised clothing and equipment will be provided where and when required.  e.g. wetsuits and climbing harnesses etc.

You are likely to get wet (often!)  Please make sure you have plenty changes of clothing, including underwear.  It is likely to be warm (during the day and in the evenings) in France, so lots of shorts and t-shirts.  It might be an idea to bring an old pair of trainers that you don’t mind getting wet during the water based activities – or a pair of “Crocs” are great too.

Casual clothes for the evenings.

Phones/MP3 Players/IPods etc:

You bring these items at your own risk!

We are unsure if you will get a phone reception for your phone at the site.  There are pay phones available.

There is a DVD player on the bus – please feel free to bring some.

Spending Money:

We are recommending a maximum of 70 Euros.  For safekeeping, this should be paid to Miss Walker who will look after it, and dispense it back to you as and when you want it.

Passports:

If you are under 18, you are covered on the school’s collective passport and you do not need to bring your own one.

If you are already 18, or will turn 18 during the trip, you must bring your own.

EHIC Cards:

Please ensure that you hand in your European Health Insurance Card to Mr Kidd now!  This is vital to avoid any medical expenses should anyone need it.

Food and Drink:

Your accommodation is full board.

We are planning to bring a selection of drinks (water and fruit juices) and some snacks for the bus journey.  However, feel free to bring your own preferences.  Not too much though!!!

Bus Times:

We are still waiting on the travel company confirming the time we will be leaving the school on the Friday.  We will post a note here as soon as we know.
